[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Denktash calls on Greek Cypriots to opt for `Path of Wisdom'According to illegal Bayrak radio (12.1.97) Ismet Sezgin, deputy leader of the Democratic Turkey Party, has arrived in the occupied area to be briefed on the recent Cyprus developments and to stress the support being extended to the Turkish Cypriots. Sezgin was received by Rauf Denktash and Dervis Eroglu.Speaking at the meeting with Sezgin, Denktash alleged that the Greek Cypriot-Greek partnership is trying to create a fait accompli under the erroneous impression that Turkey might retreat with regard to the Cyprus issue. He stated that the Greek Cypriots are currently engaged in the ploy of joining an EU of which Turkey is not a member and, in this manner, acquiring ownership of Cyprus. Referring to the Greek Cypriot armament efforts, Denktash claimed that the Greek Cypriots are trying to establish air bases on the island in contravention of the 1960 agreements. [02] Turkey is unhappy with US public statementsAccording to Ankara TRT (11.1.97), Turkey has announced that it rejects the statement made by Nicholas Burns, US State Department spokesman, regarding the recent tension in Cyprus. In reply to a question on the issue, Ambassador Omer Akbel, Foreign Ministry spokesman, said the following: "If the United States has certain views which it wishes to convey to Turkey, it should note that conveying them through the press instead of the usual diplomatic channels is not a customary means of communication between allies. Furthermore, I find it beneficial to state that the style used by the spokesman has pushed the limits of diplomatic courtesy."[03] Turks cease supporting CBMs, threaten to integrate VaroshaAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (10.1.97) Rauf Denktash has announced that the Turkish Cypriot side has shelved its agreement to the confidence-building measures package, which it supported until now with goodwill. He also threaten that if, despite all the warnings, the Greek Cypriots import the S-300 missiles, Varosha region will be integrated with Famagusta socially and economically. In a statement he issued today, Denktash alleged that through their decision to buy the S-300 missiles, the Cypriot government has shown that they want a "confrontation", not an agreement. He alleged that the Turkish Cypriot side accepted the CBMs and agreed to make certain sacrifices, but now, three years later, the Greek Cypriots have still not agreed to implement the measures. He stressed that because of the Greek Cypriots' attitude and their decision to buy the missiles, the CBMs are no longer meaningful. Therefore, he said, the Turkish Cypriot side is shelving its agreement to the CBMs which it supported until now with goodwill.He stressed that there is full harmony between Turkey and the "TRNC" regarding the Cyprus problem and that it is wrong to think that there are differences of opinion. [04] Turkish chief of staff to visit occupied area 13-14 JanuaryAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11.1.97), General Ismail Hakki Karadayi, chief of the General Staff, will go to the occupied area on 13 January (today).A statement issued by the so-called Foreign Ministry explained that a delegation of military officials will accompany General Karadayi on his visit, which was undertaken at the invitation of the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. The visit will take place on 13 and 14 January. [05] Turkey conveys `uneasiness' over Cyprus to Dutch envoyAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (11.1.97) Turkey has conveyed to the EU its views on the alleged tension created by the Cyprus Government's purchase of S-300 missiles from Russia. Ambassador Onur Oymen, Turkish Foreign Ministry under secretary, received Nikolaos Van Dam, EU term president the Netherlands' ambassador to Ankara, and expressed to him Turkey's uneasiness over the tension in Cyprus.[06] Historic Armenian Monastery destroyedAccording to ORTAM (13.1.97) the historic Armenian Monastery on the occupied Kyrenia range, near the occupied Chartzia village, has turned into rubbles.Reporting under the banner headlines "Great Shame", ORTAM says that the small rooms in the monastery where in the past people used to pray "have now been turned into rooms of shame", because before this destruction we can only feel ashamed, says ORTAM. ORTAM reports that the historic Armenian Monastery St. Magar is in a dilapidated state and needs urgent restoration. The report says that if properly restored and maintained this monastery could be a tourist site and a source of income. The monastery which was used by the Armenian community was plundered and destroyed after the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation. The Church in the monastry was pillaged and reduced to pieces.
