[01] Denktash: I received a letter from Kofi Annan

According to KIBRIS (4.3.98) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has charactarised UN Secretary General Kofi Annan's position that face to face dialogue process could be continued, as a regretable event. Denktash claimed that following the EU decision the face-to-face dialogue process had been finished.

Denktash declared that he had sent a letter to Kofi Annan congratulating him on his Iraqi success as well as asking him for an appointment to meet him. Denktash said that on 26 February he received a reply from the UN Secretary General, and that Mr. Annan was acting as though nothing had happened.

Denktash further said that he will be meeting UN special envoy Cordovez and explain to him the latest situation and the point the Cyprus problem arrived at.

[02] Sukru Gurel and Dervis Eroglu on strengthening the economy of the occupied area

According to Ankara TRT TV Network (1.3.98) Turkish State Minister responsible for Cyprus Affairs Sukru Gurel who appeared with Dervis Eroglu in the "Political Pulse " programme, answering questions on Cyprus inter alia said:

"From the minute we came to power, we have been extending all the support we can to the TRNC both to ensure that it takes the place it deserves in the international field and to strengthen its economy and social structure." .../..

Mr. Gurel went on to add: "We will deliver water in a couple of months, in balloons. Water that will initially be enough to meet the drinking water shortage. All the arrangements have been completed. Turkey's Halk Bank and Ziraat Bank are extending loans to small entrepreneurs in the TRNC exactly under the same conditions they do in Turkey. We have done that. We have done whatever is necessary to encourage investments. We signed another agreement during the honourable prime minister's current visit."

On his part Dervis Eroglu said the following:

"We will inevitably be placed under pressure during this period, because Britain has interests in the island, and the United States has interests in the island. In fact, Mr. Lamb, a former US Ambassador, had said: The cross section of US interests in the Middle East lies in Cyprus, therefore we cannot give it up".

"We will shoulder these pressures together with our people and our motherland. I will return to the economic issue and stress that as a prime minister and as a person who has been maintaining for years that we must live as a separate state, steps must be taken to strengthen our economy. Thank God, the motherland government has clearly announced to the world that it pursues a policy of two states in Cyprus."

According to HALKIN SESI (4.3.98) Izmir's Karsiyaka Municipality is twined with the occupied Kyrenia the so-called "protocol" is signed yesterday in the occupied area.
