    [01] Yilmaz, Selsznev met

    According to Anatolia news agency (21.7.98) the Russian State Duma Speaker Gennadiy Seleznev on an official visit to Turkey, left Ankara for Istanbul yesterday. He was received at Istanbul Ataturk Airport by Deputy Governor Hayrettin Balcioglu and other officials. Seleznev then met with Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz for 45 minutes. Replying to reporters´ questions at the end of the meeting, the prime minister said that they did not discuss the S-300 missiles.

    [02] Korkmazcan: ``TRNC'' no longer faced with security problem

    According to illegal Bayrak radio (21.7.98) Hasan Korkmazcan, acting speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA), has stressed that the ``TRNC'' does not have a security problem, calling on the politicians to ensure internal unity in order to institutionalize peace.

    The delegations that represented Turkey at the 20 July ``ceremonies'' have left the island.

    In a statement before his departure, Hasan Korkmazcan said that during his three-day visit he saw ``how the Turkish Cypriots are beginning to receive the fruit of the struggle they waged 24 years ago, that the military forces seen in the Turkish Cypriot land, sea, and skies during the celebrations showed once again that Cyprus will remain free forever. He added: ``This is proof that the security problem of the `TRNC´ has been solved. Everybody must take this into account. It is impossible to neutralize these forces by means of weapons collected from here and there, or by means of certain measures.''

    [03] Turkey´s military promotions in August viewed

    According to HURRIYET (21.7.98) the meeting the Supreme Military Council (YAS) will hold early in August will be a turning point for eight lieutenant generals and the major generals and rear admirals who expect to be promoted. Three vice admirals from the Naval Forces and 29 major generals from the other force commands will compete to be promoted to a higher rank.

    The major generals who may be promoted or forced to retire or whose term may be extended for another year are: Kemal Yilmaz, Saim Tezcan, Orhan Tan, Erol Kirisoglu, Utku Guney, Ayhan Cansevgisi, Kadri Ozer, Selahattin Dincer, Fevzi Turkeri, Aydin Sen, Fethi Tuncel, Cetin Erman, Ozer Altinisik, Sami Zig, Orhan Yoney, Ersin Koser, Yasar Spor, Oltan Evren, Ersin Yilmaz, Mete Ayken, Sevket Turan, Aydin Okan, Batmaz Dandin, NurI Solakoglu, Erdogan Batmaz, Ergin Onur, Turhan Bedir, Yusuf, Yusuf Soybas, and Hakki Kilinc.

    The period Yilmaz and Tezcan served as major generals was extended two times. The YAS meeting in August 1997 extended the period Tan, Kirisoglu, Guney, Cansevgisi, Ozer, and Dincer served as major generals for one year. The other major generals gained the right to be promoted in 1998.

    The YAS meeting in August will decide whether or not Yener Karahanoglu, Erol Adayener, and Haluk Sayin should be promoted to the rank of vice admiral.

    Military sources have said that only four or five of the Major generals and vice admirals are expected to be promoted to a higher rank.

    Eight lieutenant generals affiliated to the Ground Forces Command are eagerly waiting for the YAS to meet, as in the case of 32 major generals and vice admirals. Only two vacancies will be available for the promotion of the lieutenant generals when the Chief of the General Staff and the Commander of the Gendarmerie Forces retire. Lt. Gen. Tamer Akbas, Commander of the 4th Army Corps, Lt. Gen. Erdinc Demirbilek, Commander of the 9th Army Corps, Lt. Gen. Aytac Yalman, Commander of the 9th Army Corps, Lt. Gen.l Aytac Yalman, Commander of the 6th Army Corps, Lt. Gen. Teoman Erkan, Senior Assistant to the Secretary General of the National Security Council, Lt. Gen. Ali Yalcin, Commander of the Turkish Peace Force in North Cyprus, Lt. Gen. Metin Saglam, Director of the Ground Forces Command Censor and Assessment Department, and Lt. Gen. Yalcin Ertan, Chief of Staff of the Gendarmerie Command, will compete for the two positions. The lieutenant generals, apart from Erkan and Saglam, will expect to be promoted to the rank of a full general for the first time. The period Erkan and Saglam served as lieutenant generals was extended for one year.

    [04] Ecevit: Cyprus problem over for Turks

    According to the Turkish Daily News, (21.7.98) the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey Bulent Ecevit who ordered the 1974 Turkish invasion to Cyprus as Turkish Prime Minister at that time, has said that the Cyprus problem had been solved from the Turkish point of view.

    ``If we had just stood by after the military coup, the Greek military junta would have spilled over to the island and the dream of enosis would have been realized'', Ecevit said.

    Ecevit defended the presence of Turkish occupation troops on the island and said: ``If we had the intention of invading the island, we would have extended the operation for two or, three days and taken over the whole island'' Ecevit criticized Turkey for failing to explain to the world the reasons for the invasion. ``Our policies are successful, but we have failed to explain the just reasons for the intervention''.     [05] Invasion anniversary remembered in Islamabad

    According to BIRLIK (22.7.98) the so-called ``Peace and Freedom Holiday'' that is the anniversary of the Turkish invasion and occupation of part of Cyprus, has been ``celebrated'' at a reception given by the so-called Islamabad representative of the pseudostate Kemal Goberi.

    BIRLIK reports that the Honorary Guest of the reception was Pakistan´s Information Minister Sayed Mushahid Hussain who told the journalists that Pakistan will continue to support the ``just cause'' of the Turkish Cypriots. (MY)

    [06] Etkin meets Bangladeshi journalists

    According to KIBRIS (22.7.98) the so-called Foreign and Defense Minister of the pseudostate Taner Etkin, speaking to a group of Banglaldeshi journalists currently visiting the occupied area, said that the pseudostate´s existence is the basis for ``finding political peace for the Cyprus problem''. He repeated known Turkish views as regards the pseudostate. (MY)

    [07] Kondoz and Gazi set free

    According to BIRLIK (22.7.98) Osman Kondoz (42) and Mustafa Veli Gazi (35) who were caught tried and sentenced for nine months of imprisonment by the Republic´s courts, were set free 20 days earlier.

    Both Turkish Cypriots were caught on 23 October 1997 near Athienou.

    Following their release, both convicts, accused the Republic´s security forces of violating their Human Rights and resorting to torture.

    They said that they will recourse to European Human Rights Courts. (MY)

    [08] So-called-Association Council is to meet tomorrow

    According to BIRLIK (22.7.98) the so-called Joint Economic Committee which will prepare the ground for the so-called Turkey-occupied area Association Council meeting will be meeting today in the occupied Kyrenia.

    BIRLIK reports that a Turkish delegation which will conduct the talks arrived in the occupied area yesterday.

    The delegation is being headed by Ambassador Salih Zeki Karaca, Cyprus Affairs Councilor at the Turkish Prime Minister´s office, Karaca said that the so-called Association Council will meet tomorrow and will take decisions regarding the creation of ``Joint Economic Area''. (MY)
