[01] Turkish idealists said on assassination mission in pseudostate

A report in daily AVRUPA (3.8.98) says that two persons, said to have come to the occupied area from Turkey some time ago to carry out armed attacks, are reportedly carrying ``death warrants'' in their pockets. According to reports, these persons, with the initials A.F. and A.B., are armed and sheltering in occupied Morphou region, and the ``police'' has identified them but is not moving against them for now.

According to reports reaching the paper, the person with the initials A.F. arrived 10 days before the so-called local elections (28 June) and A.B. soon after the incident of the attack of a Kurdish-inhabited occupied village by members of the Turkish Idealist organization during the so- called local election campaign in the pseudostate.

Some organizations, which have so far preferred to remain anonymous, have faxed a letter to the offices of the so-called prime minister and deputy prime minister, newspapers, and trade unions concerning the identified ``hitmen''.

The text of the fax reads: ``The dimensions reached by the growing fascist threat is frightening. According to serious intelligence information reaching us, a group of Idealist fascists in the Morphou region of north Cyprus are plotting armed attacks against the revolutionary patriots in the region. We call on all officials to be vigilant against the fascists who are bringing arms and hitmen from Turkey''.

The trade unions reportedly met on the issue last week. It is also being said that they plan to issue a statement to inform the public about the situation.

[02] Tourism in the occupied area

According to KIBRIS (4.8.98) within the period 1987 to 1997 tourist installations in the occupied area have increased from 64 to 104. A 43% of these installations are hotels, a 44% are hotel apartments and a 17% are hostels.

Tourist beds have increased from 4,440 in 1987 to 8,940 in 1997. Pseudostate visitors come from Turkey, England, Russia, Germany, the USA and Pakistan.

The number of tourists who visited the occupied area in the period 1992- 1997 was 2,128.798. 78% of these tourists came from Turkey.

In 1995 the number of tourists was 385,759, in 1996 365,116 and in 1997 the number was 399,364.
