Denktash to focus on talks between ``states'' in New York contactsAccording to illegal Bayrak radio (10:30 hours, 28.9.98) in a statement at occupied Tymbou airport before he left for New York yesterday morning, Rauf Denktash said that his visit is important in terms of ``dissipating the atmosphere Greek Cypriot leader Clerides tried to create''.
He repeated his claim that following the EU resolution, the parameters on the negotiating table were eliminated. ``When we saw that'', he added, ``we said that we can negotiate only at the level of two states''. He further claimed that President Clerides is trying to eliminate the guarantee system and added: ``All this happened because the EU treated the unilateral Greek Cypriot recourse as that of the legitimate Government of Cyprus. We will explain all this in New York.'' He claimed that the Greek Cypriot leadership should put an end to this course of events and come to the negotiating table for talks at the level of ``two states''.
His first meeting in New York will take place with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan at 1100 local time on 30 September. Following his meeting with Annan, Denktash is scheduled to hold contacts with the Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) at 1200 and with Richard Holbrooke, US President Clinton´s special envoy for Cyprus, at 1600. On 1 October, Denktash will attend the OIC foreign ministers annual coordination meeting, and he will conclude his contacts in New York with a meeting with the German special representative for Cyprus on the following day.
Dentkash will proceed to Toronto, Canada, on 4 October as the guest of the Turkish Cypriot Associations. In Toronto, he will deliver a lecture and hold contacts with media organizations.
On 7 October, Denktash will return to Washington as the guest of Turkish organizations in the United States. Denktash will meet with media representatives and will be hosted by CNN on a live program.
Denktash´s visit will continue in Norway on 10 October. He will deliver a lecture in Oslo as the guest of the Norwegian Foreign Policy Institute and then proceed to Copenhagen, Denmark, on 13 October. In Denmark, Denktash will also deliver lectures, participate in a panel discussion, and meet with media organs.
Denktash´s last stop will be Istanbul, where he will arrive in 16 October. The following day, he will attend an inauguration ceremony and return to Cyprus the same evening.
Taner Etkin, ``foreign affairs and defense minister'', also left with Denktash. Etkin will attend the OIC foreign ministers meeting to be held during the UN General Assembly session in New York. Etkin will only join the New York leg of Denktash´s ``promotional tour''. He will then return to the pseudostate. Osman Ertug, ``under secretary of the foreign affairs and defense ministry'', will accompany Denktash during his 20-day visit.
