 Turkey´s 29 December NSC meeting to discuss the Cyprus problem
According to daily HURRIYET (28.12.98), Turkey´s National Security Council
(NSC) will hold its final regular monthly meeting at the Cankaya Mansion
today. Developments in and outside Turkey will be discussed during the
meeting, which will be chaired by President Demirel. Matters related to
terrorism, reactionism, Greece, Cyprus, illegal gangs, organized crime,
tarikats (religious sects), student demonstrations, use of headscarves, and
Turkey´s relations with the EU will be the main items on the agenda.
The military commanders will brief the meeting on reactionary activities
and the effort that has been made by the tarikats to benefit from the
government´s problems. The commanders will call for vigilance against such
The meeting will also discuss the global economic crisis, which has
affected Turkey. Minister of Finance Zekeriya Temizel will participate in
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit, Gen.
Huseyin Kivrikoglu, Chief of the General Staff, Minister of National
Defense Ismet Sezgin, Foreign Minister Ismail Cem, Minister of Internal
Affairs Kutlu Aktas, the Force Commanders, the Under Secretary of the
National Ingtelligence Organization, the Director General of Police, and
other high-ranking military and civilian officials will attend the meeting.
 New ``chairman'' of pseudo-assembly
KIBRIS (29.12.98) reports that so-called UBP deputy Ertugrul Hasipoglu has
been elelcted so-called chairman of the pseudo-assembly. Salih Cosar,
former ``finance minister'', is the new so-called vice-chairman. (MY)
