Denktash on Cyprus´ EU accessionAccording to KIBRIS (31.1.99), Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has alleged that the Greek Cypriot people and not Cyprus applied for EU membership, and that the aim is to achieve Enosis that they were unable to realize by the force of arms, embargoes and lies, through the EU.
Denktash said that unless the Cyprus problem is solved, unless a confederal roof is created, and unless Turkey´s guarantorship and all other rights on Cyprus are safeguarded, Cyprus´s accession to the EU would be impossible.
Commenting on Greece´s deputy Foreign Minister Yiorgos Papandreou´s statement that ``Cyprus accession to the EU will facilitate the settlement of the Cyprus problem'', Denktash claimed that ``the unilateral EU membership application by the Greek Cypriots, using the blackmailing policies of Greece, is a political juggling with ulterior bad motives''.
Denktash alleged that Greece´s aim is to ``devour'' Cyprus, and that in cooperation with the Greek Cypriots she laid down the EU trap for the Turkish Cypriots. He further alleged that the Cyprus government is trying to render the Treaty of Guarantees invalid. Denktash said since the issue of property exchange is contrary to EU laws, the Greek Cypriots dream that they will return to their homes in the north.
Denktash ntoed that once the EU membership door was opened the Greek Cypriots turned their back to the parameters - found useful by the Security Council - that were on the negotiation table.
He claimed that negotiations had turned into cheating.
Referring to his confederation proposal Denktash said that this ``state to state confederation proposal is an indication of the Turkish Cypriots´ conciliatory stance and should be evaluated accordingly.''

The so-called delegation yesterday had a long meeting with the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly´s newly-elected chairman, Lord Russel.
During the meeting Hasipoglu demanded Russel´s assistnace regarding the Turkish Cypriots equal representation in the CEPA. He claimed that a step towards this direction will contribute to the settllement of the Cyprus problem.
In his turn, Lord Russel said that Turkish Cypriot representatives were invited to the committee deliberations related to the Cyprus problem, and added that this was an important step in the settlement of the Cyprus problem.
Russel further said that his door is always open to Turkish Cypriots and wished progress in the settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Denktash rejects President Clerides´ proposal for international peace- forceAccording to KIBRIS (31.1.99) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has warned President Clerides ``not to touch the Treaty of Guarantees''. Denktash issued this warning after President Clerides´s proposal to demilitarize the island, to bring in an international peace force and and make Cyprus an EU member.
Denktash said that for the last 36 years the Greek Cypriots, with a view to getting rid of or rendering the guarantee system invalid ``have been hashing up the same dish and served it with a different sauce.''
Denktash said that President Clerides´s latest proposal was a good example of the fact that Greek Cypriots are living in wonderland. Denktash claimed that the demand for demilitarization by President Clerides was part of the ugly game played for years by Greece in Cyprus. Denktash added that with this proposal, the Greek Cypriots consider the Turkish Cypriots stupid. He demanded from Greek Cypriots to end their efforts to strengthen their defence capabilities.
Denktash also rejected the proposal for an international force, saying that it was aimed at doing away with Turkey´s guarantorship.
Denktash reiterated his claim that EU membership will not contribute to the settlement of the Cyprus problem but will render it more complex. (MY)
