    [01] Turkey - US bilateral relations

    Turkish Daily News (4.5.99) citing Anatolia News Agency, reports that all aspects of Turkish-American relations will be laid on the table this week as the 18th annual conference on bilateral ties between Turkey and the USA takes place in Washington on Thursday and Friday.

    The conference is being organized jointly by the American-Turkish Council, the American Friends of Turkey and the Turkey and the Turkish-American Business Council. The US side is expected to have representation from the US government including Congress, as well as from American business groups and think tanks.

    Among those who are scheduled to speak during the conference are Gen. Joseph Ralston, the deputy chairman of the US Joint Chief of Staff; US Senator Chuck Hagel; Turkish Defense Industries Undersecretary Yalcin Burcak; and Turkish Energy Ministry Undersecretary Yurdakul Yigitguden.

    [02] COE meetings

    ADP ``deputy'' Unal Ustel, in a statement to illegal Bayrak radio on his return from Strasbourg (3.5.99) where he attended, as part of a delegation Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, meeting said they also held meetings on the Cyprus issue with various officials during their stay in Strasbourg. Ustel said that views were exchanged on cultural treasures and heritage and especially on the Armenian monastery. Pointing out that they also had the opportunity to hold talks with the political affairs rapporteur, Ustel described all their contacts as beneficial.

    [03] Denktash S-300 missiles

    According to illegal Bayrak radio on his return from Turkey (3.5.99) where he had contacts and visited Kosovar refugees, Denktash said the Turkish Cypriots went through the same bitter experience as the Kosovars. In reply to a question on the S-300 missiles Denktash said: ``Greece and the Greek Cypriots are acting like criminals who committed a murder. This is not rational. They are anxious because they know that they will be punished for their act. Let them renounce this adventure.''

    [04] Denktash meets diplomats

    KIBRIS (5.5.99) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, had a meeting yesterday with the USA Ambassador to Cyprus Keneth Brill. There was no statement after the meeting.

    Denktash yesterday also had a meeting with the high commissioner of Australia Howard Brown. Present at the meeting was Australia´s Cyprus coordinator John Spender. There was no statement after the meeting. (
