    [01] Denktash asks for measures against money laundering

    According to HURRIYET KIBRIS (1.6.99) Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash has asked the so-called ``government'' to take ``legal measures'' against money laundering in the occupied area.

    Denktash said that he had received complaints to this effect and said ``we do not want such a reputation''.

    Denktash urged the ``coalition partners'' to follow closely the operations of off-shore banks in the occupied area.

    [02] New chairman of Journalists Association

    According to YENI DEMOKRAT (30.5.99) Saffet Saykal has been elected chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Journalists Association.

    [03] New Turkish Cabinet members

    MILLIYET (Internet version, 30.5.99) reports that Bulent Ecevitīs coalition government of the Democratic Left Party (DSP), the Nationalist Action Party (MHP), and the Motherland Party (ANAP), features ten economists, seven law scholars, six graduates of the Civil Service School, and three engineers. The most multilingual minister of the cabinet is Hikmet Sami Turk, who speaks (besides Turkish) German, English, French, and Italian.

    [04] 49,000 new ``TRNC citizens'' between 1984-1999

    KIBRIS (2.6.99) reports under banner headlines ``49 thousand people made citizens in 15 years'' and says that the so-called director of the ``Aliens Department'' of the pseudo state, Mustafa Miralay, has declared that 49 thousand people have been made ``TRNC citizens'' between 1984-1999.

    He said that they do not know the exact number of people who received ``citizenship'' between 1974-1984 because there exist no records.

    Miralay added that 30% of those who received ``TRNC citizenship'' were living outside the ``TRNC''.

    Meanwhile, two so-called DP deputies, Huzeyin Ozgurgun and Yusuf Ozkun, had a meeting with Mr Miralay. Miralay briefed the two ``deputies'' on issues related to ``citizenship''. After the meeting Ozgurgun said that in 1993, when ``general elections'' took place, 2 thousand people received ``citizenship'' by the so-called ``Council of Ministers'' decision.

    KIBRIS also reports that according to the ``citizenship law'' currently in force people living five years continuously in the occupied area, those who took part in the 1974 invasion, as well as those who worked for the Turkish terrorist organization TMT since 1 August 1958 are eligible for ``citizenship''.

    Miralay further added that no foreigner under the ``Refugee Investment Programme'' was made ``citizen''.The two Chinese, he said, were made ``citizens'' with the so-called ``Council of Ministers'' decision.

    [05] Denktash discusses money laundering issue

    KIBRIS (2.6.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had separate meetings with the so-called Attorney General Akin Sait and ``Police Director'' Erdem Demirbag with whom he discussed the ``money laundering'' issue in the occupied area.

    [06] ``1st International Sports Games'' in the occupied area

    KIBRIS (2.6.99) reports that Iranīs Tabriz Football team which is considered Iranīs East Azerbaidjan National team has arrived in the occupied area to take part in the ``1st International Sports Games''.

    Speaking at the occupied Tymbou airport one of the teamīs responsibles, Ferhat Sadagad, who is FIFA assigned reference, said that they will try to offer good football to the spectators.

    KIBRIS said that Iranian Azeris who arrived in the occupied area wondered why Turkey does not take part in the games.

    The visiting Iranians will have their first match on Saturday 5 June, with the Sudanese team.
