Denktash meets Kenneth BrillKIBRIS (30.6.99) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash had a 45- minute meeting yesterday with US Ambassador to Cyprus, Kenneth Brill.
In a statement after the meeting, Denktash said that the USA believes that the G-8 initiative on Cyprus has brought about some new elements in the solution process. Also, that the Americans believe that the Turkish side can get what it wants at the negotiation table.
Denktash further said that ``as long as the Greek Cypriot side puts forwards the precondition of being the government of the whole of Cyprus, the Turkish side cannot accept the afore-mentioned American view''. Therefore, he added, the ball is in the hands of those who recognize the Greek Cypriot administration, as he put it, as the Government of Cyprus.
On his part, Ambassador Brill stressed that in the last few days enough has been said and criticism was made as regards the G-8 resolution on Cyprus. What is important, he said, is that speculation and talk regarding the Cyprus problem to be put aside and interest be shown in the substance of the issue.
Cem: I do not like US approach to the Cyprus problemTurkish Daily News (28.6.99) publishes the first part of an interview with Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem. In reply to a question on Cyprus and Turkey-US relations Cem, inter alia, said:
``I do not like the US approach to the Cyprus problem. There are other areas as well that we would like to see Washington approach with a different policy. For example, I consider the US policy regarding Greece harmful to the peace in the Aegean because the United States is following a policy as though they want to encourage the erroneous policies of Greece.''
OIC foreign ministers meeting supports confederation proposalBIRLIK (30.6.99) reports that so-called foreign minister Tahsin Ertugruloglu continued his contacts in Burkina Faso on the sideline of the OIC (Organization of Islamic Conference) foreign ministers meeting.
Ertugruloglu said that the meeting has adopted as it is the draft resolution that was approved in Jeddah last April. That draft resolution supported the Turkish side´s confederation proposal and underlined the equality of both sides in Cyprus.
