[01] Denktash says measures against UN resolution to be announced soon

Anatolia Agency (8:00 hours, 21.6.00) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash said on Wednesday that whether or not to participate in the Cyprus proximity talks that will be held in Geneva are among the measures that will be taken against the resolution of the United Nations (UN) Security Council regarding the extension of the peace force mission on the island.

Denktaksh had a meeting with Edward Clay, the British High Commissioner.

Denktash said that they will announce within a few days the measures they have taken against the resolution regarding the extension of the peace force mission on Cyprus.

Furthermore, Anatolia Agency (16:50 hours, 21.6.00) reports that Denktash has also said that the decision on whether to participate in the third- round proximity talks to be held in Geneva will be made in the light of the measures to be taken with regards to the UN Forces in Cyprus (UNFICYP).

At a meeting he held with a group of journalists from the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Denktash assessed the developments in the aftermath of the recent UN resolution.

Noting that the issue of whether the Turkish Cypriot side will participate in the third-round proximity talks is still being debated, Denktash said:

``There are views in favour and against. This decision will be made in the light of the measures to be taken toward limiting the activities of UNFICYP.''

Denktash said that for the decision in question to be crystallized one has to wait for the visit of Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, adding that the measures that might be taken in connection with UNFICYP can be enumerated as ``charging for rent and electricity and water expenses, requiring insurance for their vehicles, and restricting their entries into and exits from the TRNC''.

Noting that these measures might be implemented within the next six months, Denktash continued: ``If at the end of this six-month period nothing changes, then we shall reconsider what will be done in connection with a Security Council that has become hostile.''

Denktash said that the United Nations asked that minor measures be implemented against them, adding that this issue was discussed with Alvaro de Soto, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan/s special Cyprus envoy, as well.

Noting that De Soto tried to make Ankara mediate, Denktash added that, however, Ankara told him that ``this is the decision of the TRNC''.

Denktash said that if minor measures are taken against UNFICYP then the possibility of attending the third-round proximity talks decreases, whereas if these measure are major then that possibility increases. Denktash said that they are trying to reach a harmony between these two views.

Referring to another possibility that is on the agenda with regard to his trip to Geneva, Denktash said that there is the possibility of his going to Geneva in order to explain the views of the ``TRNC'' to Annan but of his not attending the proximity talks. He added he will definitely be in Cyprus for the 20 July ``celebrations''.

[02] Chartered flights between Hungary and pseudostate

KIBRIS (22.6.00) reports that chartered flights between the occupied area and Hungary started yesterday. The first group of 30 Hungarian tourists arrived in the occupied area yesterday.

KIBRIS reports that the chartered flights will continue until 25 September.

The chartered flights are organized by ``Ornek Tourism'' in the occupied area and ``Club Oriental'' in Hungary.

The director of the Ornek Tourism, Ozbek Dedekorkut, has said that last week 20 Turkish Cypriots travelled to Hungary.
