[01] Denktash accuses "government" of inciting people against Turkey According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 12.10.00), Turkish Cypriot

leader Rauf Denktash has said that the economic package drawn up together with the Turkish Government is a financial package, and another package entailing economic measures must be prepared.

Denktash was speaking at a meeting with the representatives of the "Turkish Cypriot Investors Union" and the "Turkish Cypriot Hotel Owners Union". Head of the "Investors Union" Hasan Ozbafli and head of the "Hotel Owners Union" Turan Beydagli said in their speeches that the chronic problems of the investors and farmers are not being solved. On the contrary, they said, the "authorities" are confiscating the assets of people in these sectors because of their debts to the "Development Bank". They charged that instead of bringing urgent measures to restart production, the economic package will bring it to a standstill. They called on Denktash to convene a meeting where these issues can be reviewed.

Denktash pointed out that he repeatedly wrote to the "government" urging it to stop confiscating the property of the investors but to no avail. He charged that an economic fire lit by the "government" is raging in the pseudostate. He recalled that to put out this fire, the "government" drew up an economic package and the package gained its current form after experts in Turkey worked on it. Denktash stressed that it is very wrong to blame Turkey for the contents of the package. It is as wrong, he said, to incite the citizens against Turkey.

Addressing the "government", Rauf Denktash said: "If you thought that this package could not be implemented, you should have resigned. Since you said that it could be implemented, you should stop accusing Turkey now. What Turkey did was organize your package in a way to save the Treasury".

Denktash asserted that the economic package drawn up together with Turkey is merely a financial one, and another package must be drawn up entailing economic measures. He said that the "government" must hold an extraordinary meeting with all the economic sectors. Denktash noted that all the sectors are in dire straits at the moment but the "government" continues to say that it stands erect.

[02] Opposition supports general strike against economic package According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (10:30 hours, 12.10.00) the Democratic

Party (DP) central administrative council has decided to instruct its "parliamentary group" to do all it can to prevent the passage of the "laws" on the economic package by the so-called assembly.

The council also decided to support and participate in the general strike to be staged on 17 October. In its statement, the DP says that it will do all it can to force the National Unity Party-Communal Liberation Party "coalition" to resign.

The Patriotic Unity Movement (YBH) also announced that it will support the 17 October general strike and called on all workers to actively participate in the strike. In a written statement, YBH Secretary General Izzet Izcan charged that the status quo and the regime have gone bankrupt and he blamed Rauf Denktash, the "governments" that were in power until today, and the leaders of the Turkish Republic for that.

Arif Salih Kirdag, leader of the Freedom and Justice Party (OAP), also announced his support for the general strike against the socio-economic package. He said that OAP is strongly opposed to the usurpation of the rights the Turkish Cypriots gained in the past.

[03] Talat meets Norwegian MP YENI DUZEN (13.10.00) reports that the leader of the Republican Turkish

Party, Mehmet Ali Talat, met yesterday with the Norwegian MP Haakon Blankenborg, who is continuing his contacts in the occupied area.

In a statement before the meeting, Blankenborg said that a joint project on women/s issues between Norway and the occupied area will be materialized, stressing that it will be on a non-governmental level. He explained that the project will be carried out with the cooperation of NGO/s, such as trade unions, in the occupied area. Blankenborg added that they would discuss with Talat the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the economic situation in the occupied area.

Stressing that the civil organizations are always under the influence of the pseudostate, Talat said, "The state has a bad habit of interfering in such kind of activities. For this reason you have a difficult task to accomplish. I wish you every success".

On the issue of the Cyprus EU accession negotiations Talat said that there is no economic balance between the two sides. "This is a very difficult point for Cyprus/ accession into the EU", Talat said.

[04] Somalian ambassador visits "university" According to VATAN (13.10.00) the Somalian Ambassador to the United Arab

Emirates, Hussein M. Bullaleh, had various contacts at the "Eastern Mediterranean University (DAU). Inter alia, he had a meeting with the dean of "DAU" Prof. Dr. Ozay Oral who briefed him about the "university".
