[01] Sweden's Lindh Says Mistake for EU To Intervene in Cyprus Talks Anatolia Agency (1308 hours, 23.1.01) reports that Anna Lindh, the Foreign

Minister of Sweden, the European Union (EU) Term President, said on Tuesday that if the EU intervenes in Cyprus talks, it will make a mistake.

Speaking in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Parliament (AFET), Lindh noted that the Cyprus proximity talks continue within the framework of the United Nations (U.N.).

Lindh said that Rauf Denktas left the negotiation table, but this is temporary.

Lindh added that they should not put forward any proposals, but they should follow the developments and expect Turkey to keep its promises.

[02] Eroglu on Relations Between Turkey - pseudostate, Cyprus problem A report in KIBRIS (20.1.01) says that so-called prime minister Dervis

Eroglu has expressed the belief that an agreement cannot be reached on the Cyprus problem with the help of the non-paper that UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has introduced ``with the aim of pleasing the Greek Cypriots''. Eroglu has said that on the contrary, the non-paper aims at worsening the conditions of the Turkish Cypriots.

Stressing that for this reason, the pseudo-government has decided that the talks could resume only under better conditions, Dervis Eroglu has said that they prefer to draw up their policies in consultation with Turkey out of their belief that ``TRNC'' cannot exist without motherland Turkey.

"Today Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit made this truth known when he said that Turkey cannot stay without Cyprus. Turkey will not abandon the Turkish Cypriots. Turkey will also not give up this island or its rights over this island," Eroglu has said.

Dervis Eroglu has made the aforementioned remarks while meeting a YDP [New Democracy Party] delegation headed by YDP Central Undersecretariat Spokesman Cetin Atalay. (Tr. Note: YDP has been very recently established in the occupied area as a political party). In remarks he has made during YDP's visit, Eroglu has said: "What we need to do is to make the Turkish Cypriots feel happy. We also need to solve the existing economic problems with the help of motherland Turkey, to encourage the Turkish Cypriots to stay in Cyprus, and to develop further the existing ties with motherland Turkey."

Expressing the belief that the United States, Britain, and the EU have failed to understand the Turkish Cypriots, Eroglu has said that despite knowing all the facts, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has feigned ignorance about these facts.

"We may be seeking to enter the EU. Turkey is seeking to enter the EU as well. However, everyone must understand that we will not enter the EU before an agreement is reached on the Cyprus problem," Eroglu has said. Eroglu has also stressed that it is impossible to participate in the talks on the Cyprus problem as part of the Greek Cypriot delegation.

Warning that participating in the talks as part of the Greek Cypriot delegation would be tantamount to recognizing the Republic of Cyprus and accepting a minority status within this republic, Dervis Eroglu has said that even though there are a number of people who would accept taking part in the talks as part of the Greek Cypriot delegation, he is completely against this idea.

Eroglu has said: "Of late, a number of institutions and organizations have expressed various views against Turkey and against the existence of the Turkish Armed Forces in KKTC. These institutions have even embarked on a mission to incite everyone to react to motherland Turkey. This is wrong.

It is a big mistake to go to the Ledra Palace crossing with the aim of complaining against Turkey. We can solve our problems by maintaining dialogue among ourselves. Therefore, in my opinion, complaining against Turkey at the Ledra Palace crossing is wrong. I hope that this kind of a mistake will not be repeated in the future."

In remarks he has made during the visit, YDP Central Secretariat Spokesman Cetin Atalay has said that his party upholds pro-liberalism views. Explaining that YDP's programs give importance to the economy, Atalay has said that they seek to keep ``TRNC'' alive and that they will never bargain on the existence of ``TRNC''.

In remarks he has made during the visit, Esref Dusenkalkar, an official from YDP, has expressed his regret for the ``coalition'' partner's (Communal Liberation Party CLP) endeavor to oppose a decision adopted at the ``parliament'' on the withdrawal of the Turkish Cypriot side from the proximity talks. Dusenkalkar has argued that the present instability in the pseudostate stems from the CLP/s opposition to this decision.

[03] 41 NGO's Protest Economic Policies, Democracy Problems in pseudostate Illegal Bayrak Radio 1 (11:30 hours, 23.1.01) reports that the 41 the

nongovernmental organizations [NGO's] continued to stage demonstrations to protest the pseudo-government's political and economic policies. DEV-IS union leader Ali Gulle said that "the economic conditions deteriorated and turned into a crisis as a result of the economic policies pursued by the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot governments." He stressed that "all the sectors in the country have now collapsed."

Varol Oztug, the leader of a teacher's union, charged that "the decision not to participate in the proximity talks was imposed on the Turkish Cypriot people just as the economic package was."

[04] Pseudostate/s grapefruit exported to the UK According to KIBRIS (24.1.2001) 520 tones of grapefruit have been exported

from the occupied area to the UK.

KIBRIS reports that the grapefruits were exported by a company based in Iskenderun (Alexandretta), South Turkey. The name of the exporting company is Bamex.

The grapefruit were loaded to the Honduran - registered ship ``Cristal Pride'' at the occupied Famagusta port. The ship was coming from Israel with a cargo of potatoes and from the occupied area went to the Iskenderun port for further cargo.

KIBRIS says that export of citrus fruit from the occupied area through Turkish exporting firms will continue during the coming days.

[05] National Revival Party does not endorse joint communique of political parties meeting

According to KIBRIS (24.1.01) the deputy chairman of the National Revival Party (UDP) Mehmet Barut who took part in the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties joint meeting at the Ledra Palace hotel the other day, has declared that the joint statement read to the press by the Slovak Ambassador is not binding on him nor his party.

In a written statement yesterday, Mehmet Barut said: ``The content of the final communique declared at the end of the meeting held at the Ledra Palace hotel between Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties on Monday 22 January, 2001, is not the view of the UDP nor its representative Mehmet Barut. Therefore, the said final communique is neither binding on the Party nor its representative Mehmet Barut since at the meeting the party/s view that the proximity talks have ended and the talks should be held on a state-to-state basis was clearly put forward''.
