[01] Denktash Continues To Say No to UN talks

Alvaro De Soto, the UN Secretary General's special Cyprus envoy, had a second meeting with Rauf Denktash on Monday. After the hour-long meeting, De Soto declined to make a statement. Denktash, however, made a short assessment. Noting that they concluded their meetings with De Soto and that the views of the Turkish Cypriot side were conveyed in a comprehensive manner, Denktash said that the special envoy will make his own assessment in the light of these views and that the stand to be adopted in the future will be determined. In reply to a question on what will happen in the future, Denktash said: Everything depends on De Soto.

According to ilelgal Byarak radio, Denktash said: So long as the Greek Cypriots continue to advance on the path of the EU under the title of the legitimate Cyprus government and so long as they ignore our equality, there is nothing much we can do. We cannot grant them, neither now nor in the future, the right to be the sole government of Cyprus.

In reply to a question by a Greek Cypriot correspondent on whether there are any problems between the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey, Denktash said that there definitely is no problem, adding: Do not be frightened by Turkey. In reply to another question on the proximity talks, Denktash said: As has been expressed earlier, it is impossible to continue the talks under the present conditions.

[02] Journalists not convinced by Denktash Columnist Turgut Afsaroglu writes in AVRUPA daily (28.2.01) that the Turkish

journalists were not convinced by the arguments of Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas who held a news conference in Istanbul last week to convince the Turkish media on the correctness of his Cyprus policy. Rather, Afsaroglu adds, the conviction among the Turkish journalist was that by his intransigence Denktash is only serving the Greek Cypriot interests and impeding Turkey's EU process. Afsaroglu quotes at length a commentary by Radikal writer Haluk Sahin, who says that Denktash is no longer convincing and there is now a growing public suspicion that he is being used by the anti-EU Turkish isolationist wanting to turn Turkey into an introverted oriental country.

[03] Eroglu Leaves for Izmir meetings According to Bayrak Radio 1 (29.1.01) pseudo Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu

has stated that the difficulties and major problems encountered in the implementation of the economic stability programme are being discussed by Turkish Cypriot and Turkish technical delegations.

Eroglu left for Izmir where he will hold various contacts and participate in an Aegean Chamber of Industry meeting. In a statement at Tymbou Airport prior to his departure, Eroglu said that his so-called ``government'' is working on the difficulties being encountered in the implementation of the economic stability programme and on future-oriented investments.

Explaining the work being conducted on the allocation of the $350 million loan envisaged in the partnership council agreement signed between the so- called ``Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus'' and Turkey, Eroglu said that the economic delegations of the two countries are continuing their work to determine the fields the loans will be invested in as well as new requirements. He noted that the situation of the ``TRNC'' economy, its investment fields, incentives, and the recent developments will be discussed in the contacts he will hold. He continued: I will once again try to present our policy. Within the framework of his contacts, Eroglu will meet with the president of the Aegean Chamber of Industry, the Izmir mayor, the Aegean Army commander , and the Izmir governor.

[04] Eroglu Says Greek Cypriots Exploit Turks' Goodwill Dervis Eroglu, the so-called the Prime Minister of the pseudostate said on

Monday that they have an interlocutor which exploits their good will.

Anatolia news agency reports that Eroglu, who came to Aegean Izmir province as the guest of Aegean Region Chamber of Industry, told reporters that they cut the proximity talks with the Greek Cypriot side because they have an interlocutor which exploits their good will.

Eroglu noted that ``TRNC'' continues to exist as an independent state through the support of Turkey.

``Some developments have been marked since 1968. The world has to see the reality. The realities before 1974 and the current realities should be explained. The world has to accept the existence of two states on the island. But, they continue to ignore us in the negotiation table. The world hears ``TRNC'' but assumes itself as if it did not hear it. The world sees ``TRNC'' but ignores it and does not understand it,`` Eroglu said.

Eroglu added: ``if we explain our rightful case to the whole world with the support of Turkey, I hope there can be a peace agreement on Cyprus in the future. Of course, this will happen if we can find a good-willed interlocutor like ourselves. It is not possible to say that our interlocutor is good-willed today.``

``We have an interlocutor which exploits our good will. We meet a side which is deprived of good will, at a table from time to time. We have an interlocutor which exploits our good will and shows itself as a state, the territory of which was occupied. We think the world will see the realities in time,`` Eroglu added.

Touching on the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz and Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou in Davos, Eroglu said that it is so natural that two neighbour countries sometimes meet each other.

Eroglu noted that Greece entered into a rapproachment process with Turkey following the massive earthquake but that it is not possible to say that Greece`s attitude towards Turkey and Cyprus has changed.

Emphasizing that Turkey always puts forward its good will regarding the Cyprus question, Eroglu said, ``Yilmaz is a person who dealt with these issues for years and he explained the realities to Papandreou. He explained our rightful reasons to end the proximity talks.`` Eroglu claimed that if Papandreou informs the Greek Cypriot administration about these realities, the proximity talks can resume.

[05] Bank to be liquidated According to illegal Bayrak Radio 1 a Turkish Cypriot ``Court'' has decided

to liquidate Hurbank. The chief judge of the Court, assessing the liquidation application made by the ``state''-appointed administrators, ordered the liquidation of Hurbank. The Court also appointed Omer Aydin Koseoglu, director of the ``Receivership Department'', as the official in charge of the liquidation.

In a statement to the Turkish Cypriot News Agency, Koseoglu said that they will begin their work in the light of this decision and in line with the liquidation procedures. Koseoglu added that they will later hold a meeting with the depositors. He said that they will begin to collect debts owed to the bank, evaluate the bank's assets, and begin payment to depositors.

minister of the pseudostate Mustafa Akinci, has declared that, although it has not yet reached the desired level, there was an increase in tourist arrivals to the occupied area.

He said that in 2000 the bed capacity in the tourism sector has increased to 10213 and that in the near future this number will double.
