[01] Denktas claims that the EU are beginning to understand the Turkish positions on Cyprus

The Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has claimed that the European Union officials are beginning to understand and support the Turkish position on the Cyprus problem, reports KIBRIS (17.09.01).

Talking today on the programme «Midday» of KIBRIS FM radio, Mr Denktas said that the Europeans «have started to see the reality» in Cyprus.

Referring to his proposal for a face to face meeting with President Clerides, he noted that the aim of this was to prove the so-called «intransigence» of the President of the Republic, admitting thus that his real intention was not a creative meeting but to make a political manoeuvre.

Mr Denktas said also the terrorist attack against the USA will postpone for a while the talks regarding the Cyprus problem. However, he argued that shortly the issue will again be on the agenda.

[02] The foreign trade deficit of the pseudostate increases

According to the so-called «State Planning Organization» the foreign trade deficit of the pseudostate increased to 375,5 million US dollars in 2000, reports KIBRIS (17.09.01), adding that in 1997 this number was only 57,1 million.

The average increase of pseudostate`s foreign trade deficit within the period 1997 - 2000 was 24 %, while the total increase in the same period reached the 555 %.

The paper writes also that the deficit in the trade with Turkey increased to 256,4 million dollars in 2000. In 1997 this deficit was only 24,3 million.

[03] Angolemli a candidate of Communal Liberation Party's leadership

KIBRIS (15/9/01) reports that the so-called MP of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP), Huseyin Angolemli has announced his candidacy for the leadership of CLP after the announcement of the CLP's leader Mustafa Akinci that he is leaving the post.

Angolemli, in an interview to the newspaper, inter alia said that the CLP has passed a very difficult period and called on the party grass roots and said that a difficult struggle is beginning. Assessing Akinci's decision on leaving his post Angolemli said that, "it was a right decision in the name of democracy".

[04] 109,400 forged US dollars found in the occupied areas

According to KIBRIS (15/9/01) the so-called Operations and Drug Department of the pseudo-police, during an operation on 5 September, arrested a person named Ali Milli while entering to the occupied areas from Turkey. In his possession "police" found forged US dollars of 100 USD banknotes, amounting to 109,400 USD. Ali Milli was taken into custody and "police" started an investigation regarding the case.

[05] EU Commission Turkey Representative supports the resumption of the talks on the Cyprus problem

KIBRIS (15/9/01) reports the European Commission Turkey Representative Ambassador Karen Fogg, after a meeting with Turkey's State Minister Nejati Arseven, said the following to reporters: "Let us talk about Turkey. The Foreign Relations Commission is going to publish a report on all candidate countries in the last week of October. That report concerns Turkey as well. Just as EU Commissioner for Enlargement Gunter Verheugen said, we want the talks over Cyprus to start again and we believe we can get a result out of them."

[06] Eurasia Group think tank reports that Turkey will be under pressure regarding the Cyprus problem

According to KIBRIS (15/9/01) New York based think tank group, "Eurasia Group" has published a report in which it analyses the effects on Eurasia countries, in the wake of the terrorists' attacks in the USA.

The report among others refers to Turkey and says that Turkey's importance, as NATO member will increase but on the other hand it will be under pressure regarding the Cyprus problem.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[07] «Avrupa» estimates that nothing will be the same in the Cyprus problem after the terrorist attack in the USA

Under the title «The last tango in Cyprus», «Avrupa» (15.09.01) expresses the view that nothing will be the same in the Cyprus problem after the 11 September terrorist attack in the United States of America. The paper writes, among other things, the following:

«...Nothing will be the same any more. In the Cyprus problem too, nothing will be as it used to be before. All those things which were said before 11 September belong to the past and lost their value. ...

What will the course of the Cyprus problem be from now on? ...The Cyprus problem has been frozen. Everything is postponed until a new order comes. Let the Greek Cypriots hide it as long as they want. Everything is there. It is not possible not to feel their disappointment. Until 11 September everything was going fine. There was no place for Turkey and Denktas to hide. Time was working against the Turkish side. Right at that moment the film was cut and everything lost its previous value. ...

Now Turkey is highly valued , because of her powerful army and her strategic position. Now let no one expect the European Union to exert pressure on Turkey or to apply the decisions against Turkey taken by the European institutions before 11 September. All these will be wiped off like the old loans, or at least they will be frozen. Is it now the time to offend Turkey, the powerful gendarme who is situated above the countries which have been declared terrorists and will be attacked by the USA?

(Turkey) has now the chance to convince more about her demands on internal and external problems, only if she comes out of these wars without any accident or trouble. ...».
