[01] The Foreign Minister of Greece visited Turkey

Ankara Anatolia (10.10.01) reports that the Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said on Wednesday that all the countries should isolate those who want to exploit religion and condemn those who support terrorism.

Papandreou held a news conference at Hilton Hotel in Istanbul following his meeting with the Archbishop of Constantinople and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomeos and briefed about his visit.

Recalling a meeting, which has taken place in Italy last year with the initiative of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, where the representatives of the three religions participated in, Papandreou pointed out the decisions taken in the meeting.

Papandreou said that at the end of the meeting the clergymen condemned those who use religion by giving priority to nationalism, who cause damage to human life and moral values, and those who cover policies in this respect. He said the decisions that had been taken at that meeting carried a very big importance when the current situation is considered.

Papandreou said everybody should isolate those who use religion and condemn those who support terrorism.

Pointing out that it was seen today that different leaders in the world came together and exerted mutual efforts against terrorism, Papandreou said he had the opportunity to meet his U.S. and Russian counterparts, and the President of the European Union Commission. Speaking about his visit to Turkey, Papandreou said he talked to Foreign Minister Ismail Cem on the phone on Tuesday evening. Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said on Wednesday that his country has always been against terrorism, adding that ``Greece didn't recognize the terrorist organization PKK. Its attitude regarding this issue is also clear.``

Speaking in the news conference, Papandreou said that the religious leaders can set up a front against terrorism and noted that they want to hold a congress about this issue in the coming days.

Papandreou said that he came to Istanbul to meet with Patriarch Bartholomeos to develop this idea, adding that leaders of monotheist religions should act together and they should give messages of peace and love.

Papandreou said that they also want to invite the representatives of countries like Pakistan and India to the congress planned.

Responding to questions of journalists who reminded about allegations that there were PKK camps in Greece, Papandreou said: ``Greece has always been against terrorism, and it didn't recognize PKK. Our sensitivity in human rights is known. We particularly believe that people from different religions and ethnic origins constitute a multicultural mosaic. We think that this mosaic has to unite people. This is not only the attitude of Greece, but also the whole Europe. ``

``One can't equate the Muslim world with terrorism. Terrorism can use other religions in another time. Terrorism can't be allowed in any way, `` said Papandreou and noted that the view of Turkey which says that nobody can declare the whole Islamic world as terrorist is very important.

``Terrorists try to use only various ideologies, `` he said.

When asked if the attitude of EU would change towards those persons who were declared as terrorists in Turkey after the incidents that took place in the U.S., Papandreou said: ``We share the view of Turkey regarding to fight together against terrorism. EU`s attitude is very clear on this issue. Emus conditions for all countries and Turkey are the same. We think that EU and Turkey have to further come closer.``

Upon a question about the Cyprus question, Papandreou said: ``Cyprus has been a problem between Turkey and Greece for years. But the relation between Turkey and Greece is open to cooperation. The recent developments constitute an important opportunity to find a solution. I believe that it will be solved.``

[02] The Turkish Foreign Minister to visit Greece

The Turkish Foreign Minister Ismail Cem will pay a two-day working visit to Greece on November 7, the Foreign Ministry said Monday. Relations between the two NATO allies have been steadily improving over the past two and-a-half years, bolstered by a mutual outpouring of help following killer quakes that struck both countries in 1999.

[03] The Turkish Grand National Assembly voted in favour of decree to send troops abroad

According to HURRIYET (11.10.01) the Parliamentary General Assembly accepted on Wednesday the decree on Turkey's sending troops to foreign countries and its accepting the stationing of foreign troops in Turkey within the scope of operation ``Enduring Freedom.``

A total of 422 deputies joined the voting with 319 deputies voting in favour of the decree and 101 against. Two deputies abstained.

The parliament has permitted the government to send troops to foreign countries and to accept the stationing of foreign troops in Turkey within the scope of operation ``Enduring Freedom.`` The government will set the scope, limit, time and period of sending troops to foreign countries and the stationing of foreign troops in Turkey within the framework of the operation ``Enduring Freedom.`` The operations will be staged within the framework of the principles and permissions of the government.

[04] Turkish Government to hand over the authority to General Staff

As Ankara focused on the reports about further contribution of Turkey concerning the ongoing operation against Afghanistan, it is being stated by officials in Ankara that the government will hand over the authority partially to the General Staff, Turkish Daily News (11.10.01) reports.

Foreign Ministry sources told reporters on Wednesday that the government will give the authority to the military, but it will be the government to decide on the framework of that authority.

In fact, it is the military who raised such a demand, observers say.

Due to the Article 117 of the Constitution, in case of a war, the President is the chief commander of the Turkish Armed Forces and the General Staff, which commands the armies, is responsible before the Prime Minister.

The Chief of the General Staff becomes the de facto head of the Turkish army, sources say.

The Ministry, on the other hand, focuses on humanitarian aid operations for Afghanistan, as well as the political and military side of the ongoing operation.

Turkish soldiers went to Florida, but not to Pentagon Meanwhile, Wednesday's press reports were corrected by the same officials, stating that Turkish soldiers went to the command centre in Florida, but not to Pentagon. It was reported on Wednesday that a group of Turkish soldiers headed by a General went to the Pentagon, writes Turkish Daily News.

[05] Fourteen Afghans entered the occupied areas

Yeni Demokrat (11/10/01) reports that 14 Afghans were "arrested" by the occupation regime police, because they have entered "illegally "the occupied areas. According to the "Police Press Bulletin" the Afghans arrived in the occupied areas on the night of 8 October without "permission". The pseudopolice found them along the road of occupied Rizokarpaso and Cape Apostolos Andreas on the night of 9 October. The investigation regarding the issue is continuing.

[06] A bicommunal meeting was held yesterday at the Ledra Palace Hotel

KIBRIS (11/10/01) reports that the political leaders of both communities came together yesterday at the Ledra Palace Hotel. The meeting was organized by the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Nicosia. The Greek and Turkish Cypriot political parties condemned the recent terrorist attacks against the US and international terrorism and pointed out that "economic, political and religious problems and differences have to be tackled by the international community, effectively and justly."

The Slovak Ambassador Dusan Rozbora stated that during the joint meeting they discussed the possibilities of taking concrete steps aiming at rapprochement between the two Cypriot communities. He also added that they have established a sub-committee for organizing future bicommunal events.

[07] CLP will hold their 18th General Congress

According to ORTAM (11/10/01) the 18th General Congress of the Communal Liberation Party (CLP) is going to be held at the Ataturk Culture Centre of the so-called "Near East University" on 14 October. During the meeting of the General Congress the general leader of the party, the members of the party's central committee, the supreme disciplinary committee and the audit committee will be elected. The leader of CLP Mustafa Akinci announced that he would not be a candidate.

[08] KTOS and KTOEOS reiterate that occupied Cyprus is an "open prison"

"Yeniduzen" (11.10.01) reports that the occupation regime has not allowed the delegations participating in the Second Balkan Conference of the World Education International, which is taking place in the free areas of Cyprus between 11 and 13 October, to enter the occupied areas.

The paper writes that the professional unions of the Turkish Cypriot Primary and Secondary School Teachers (KTOS and KTOEOS), which are participating in the Conference, issued a common statement criticizing the attitude of the pseudostate and reiterating that the occupied areas of Cyprus have been turned into an open prison.

"The bans mean that they (the occupation regime) are applying embargo on the world and that they are challenging it. These actions reiterate that they have turned our country into an open prison", says the statement.

It is noted that the 32 delegates from nine countries wanted to pass into the occupied areas to see the Turkish Cypriot schools and the way they work.

[09] The Farmers' Union is asking for urgent measures

KIBRIS (11.10.01) reports that the Turkish Cypriot Farmers' Union has asked the pseudogovernment to take urgent measures to save people working in the sector of agriculture. The farmers noted that they are still not able to enter their fields inspite of the fact that the sowing period has come close.

The paper writes that yesterday the recently elected leadership of the Union, under its Chairman Alican Kabakci, visited the so-called "Prime Minister", Dervish Eroglu and informed him about their problems, the most important of which is the interruption of the production due the increase of the costs.

The farmers asked also to be informed by Mr Eroglu about the provisions regarding the sector of agriculture in the new package of measures, which has been recently announced by the occupation regime aiming at solving the economic problems of the pseudostate.

On the other hand, Mr Eroglu said it was difficult to decrease the cost of some inputs such as pesticides and diesel oil.

"We are passing through difficult days. I hoe we will not face more difficulties because of the war. .", he added.

    [B] COMMENTS AND EDITORIALS

[10] "Avrupa" about the new tourist map prepared by the occupation regime

Under the title "We have settled the South as well" "Avrupa" (11.10.01) comments on the tourist map prepared recently by the occupation regime. The paper writes the following:

"Have you seen the new tourist road map of Northern Cyprus? If you have not, you must definitely find it and see it. Your horizon will be broadened. You will feel mentally alerted.

You know that our map was torn after 1974. Maps appeared showing half of Cyprus. They were hanged on the walls like a dead man with a headless body and on the bottom the words 'Northern Cyprus' were written. On the half maps there is no Southern Cyprus. There is only Northern Cyprus. .

The new maps, which are in our hands, are not the same like the old half maps. Cyprus is a whole. The south is also included on this map. However it has another characteristic. The names of the villages, towns and areas in the South have been Turkified. The difference of this operation from the 'Turkification', which took place in the North after 1974 is the following: We have changed the names in the North after we captured this place, whereas we did the same thing with the South before gaining control of the area. .

What can we see on our new map? Let us just have a look. (On the new map) the village of Silikou, was turned into Silifke, Kandou into Canakkale, Piskopou (Episkopi) into Yalova, the Piskopou (Episkopi) Bay into Yalova Bay, the Cape of Gata into Dogaz Burnu, the Cape Greco into Boyraz Burnu, Koshi village into Uc Sehitler, Marathasa valley into Maden valley, Arodes village into Asagi Kalkanli, Akatu into Akarsu, Ay Yiannis into Aydin, Stavrokonou into Aydogan, Polemidhia into Binatli, Mandirga into Yesilova.

And there are not only these. There are more.

Who thought of that? Why? What is the benefit to the Turkish Cypriots from this? We could not know. However, as they have got into this trouble, it means that those who did this job know something. Or are we being prepared for a third military operation? Let those who had the bright idea of turning the Cape of Gata into Dogan Burnu tell us so that we could learn. .Is the command from Ankara? As the Kandou was turned into Canakkale there must be a hidden meaning in this! These things do not happen without a reason! There must definitely be a hidden blemish"!
