[01] Denktas will leave for Paris via Istanbul on the 4th of September

According to KIBRIS (30.08.02) the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas will leave the occupied area for Paris via Istanbul on the 4th of September.

The paper reports that before leaving for the 6th September meeting in Paris with the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Denktas will have separate meetings in Cyprus with Lord David Hannay, Britain's special representative on Cyprus on the 2nd of September and with Thomas Weston ,US Special Coordinator on Cyprus on the 4th of September.

[02] Devlet Bahceli says the scenarios for a new government in Turkey aim at handing over Cyprus

Istanbul CNN TURK Television (29.08.02) broadcast that Nationalist Action Party (NAP) leader Devlet Bahceli reacted against the scenarios to establish a new government. Addressing the ceremony in which Yasar Okuyan joined the NAP, Bahceli criticized Mesut Yilmaz and Tansu Ciller, in particular, and said:

"Scenarios that do not conform with the spirit of democracy are being staged on the basis of calculations of political fortune and interests. These multi-act plays are being staged by means of mediators and in the presence of witnesses. The scriptwriters and the actors of these plays are locked on to an illegitimate goal with great determination. The fact that they have been caught red-handed at every phase of these scenarios does not daunt them. They continue to engage in politics on slippery grounds by placing the blame on one another.

Are those, who accepted the EU impositions regarding the death penalty and mother tongue education and broadcasts by forging an alliance, making preparations now to accept the imposition on the Cyprus issue? Does Mrs Ciller, Mr Yilmaz, the New Turkey Party (NTP), and the Felicity Party (FP) want to establish a new government in order to hand over Cyprus as well?

As regards the NAP, there are attempts to face the Turkish nation equipped with the EU blackmail. There are attempts to spread the fear of 4 November by showing the EU stick.

Istanbul NTV (29.08.02) in a related report, carries the following recorded part of Bahceli's speech at the ceremony. "It is no longer possible to deceive the Turkish nation by peddling the EU and concealing the truth. The Turkish nation is being told that the EU decision will become clear after the elections, at the Copenhagen summit on 14 December. This is not correct. The question of whether the EU wants an honourable membership process for Turkey and its intentions on the Cyprus issue will become apparent in October. The facts will be revealed. The Turkish nation will see this, and go to the polls on 3 November and make its decision. This is what all the flurry is about."

[03] Turkish Foreign Policy Institute Publishes ''Cyprus and International Law' ' Book

According to KIBRIS (30.08.02), the Turkish Foreign Policy Institute has published a book ''Cyprus and The International Law' in English.

The paper reports that the editor of the book is retired Turkish ambassador Resat Arim.Contributors to the book are: Prof. Dr Ali Karaosmanoglu, Mumtaz Soysal, Huseyin Pazarci, Rauf Versan, Kudret Ozersay and Zaim Necatigil.

The book deals with the legal aspects of the Cyprus problem in a comprehensive manner.

[04] Campaign on the Internet for the two imprisoned Turkish Cypriot journalists

AFRIKA (30.08.02) reports that the "Group for Independent Cyprus" has launched a campaign on the Internet against the "Denktas - Ankara occupation regime", which convicted the two Turkish Cypriot journalists, Sener Levent and Memduh Ener, to six months in prison.

The members of the Group say that it is they who have written the "Who is the number one traitor?" article, which has been the reason for the imprisonment of the two journalists.

Furthermore, in their statement they call on everybody who agrees with this article to participate in the "I have written it" signatures campaign. Those who wish to participate in the campaign could search for the following addresses in the Internet:

    1) bagimsizkibriskomitesi@yahoo.com and 2) benyazdim@africamail.com

[05] A Bi-communal Peace Festival will take place on Sunday

Weekly YENI CAG (30.08.02) reports that on Sunday 1 September 2002 a Peace Festival will take place at Ledra palace Hotel, in the UN - controlled buffer zone.

The Festival is organized by the youth organizations of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties, which comprise the Bi-Communal Youth Forum. These organizations are the following: The youth organizations of Republican Turkish Party, Communal Liberation Party and Patriotic Unity Movement from the Turkish Cypriot side and EDON, NEDISI, NEDIK, NEOS, NE.OI and ONED from the Greek Cypriot side.

[06] Izcan accuses Denktas for the non-solution of the Cyprus problem

AFRIKA (30.08.02) reports that Izzet Izcan, chairman of the Patriotic Unity Group, has accused Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas of being responsible for the non-solution of the Cyprus problem.

In a statement he issued yesterday, Mr Izcan criticizes Turkey's intention to annex the occupied part of Cyprus in case the European Union accepts the island as its full member before a solution to its political problem is reached.

Referring to the non-solution, Mr Izcan says:

"The most important reason for this is Denktas who ignores the international law, does not recognize the UN decisions and, having the support of the hawks in Turkey who oppose the solution, he does not even accept the agreements which bear his own signature. .When Denktas projects the discussions about the sovereignty, he actually wants to make official the sovereignty of Ankara in Cyprus. For this reason he ignores the wishes of his own people and does not take the Turkish Cypriots into consideration during the talks he conducts. He tries to make the intransigent policy he created with those in Turkey who oppose a solution accepted both by the Cypriots and the world. . The thing, which must be done is to return to the international agreements and the relevant UN resolutions, which protect the independence and the territorial integrity of Cyprus".

[07] The Turkish handball team will enter the Republic of Cyprus from Larnaca

KIBRISLI (30.08.02) reports that Turkey's women handball champion, the team of Uskudar, will come to Cyprus through Larnaca Airport, in order to play with the team of Latsia for the European championship.

[08] Jalal Talabani: Turkey not to aid US strike on Iraq

NTV television, (29.08.02) broadcast that Washington has given assurances that Turkey will not become involved in any effort to unseat the government of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, according to a senior Iraqi opposition leader. "The United States has the technology and logistics to stage an attack to change the regime on their own. They do not need us or anyone else," the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's Jalal Talabani said to the Reuters news agency Wednesday.

Speaking after a meeting of Iraqi opposition leaders in London, Talabani said the US had given a commitment that neither Turkey nor Iran would take part in any attempt to remove Saddam Hussein from power or become involved within Iraq itself.

"The United States promised us in Washington that there would be no external interference from Turkey or Iran," he said. Senior Iraqi opposition leaders met with US officials in Washington earlier this month to discuss the possible overthrow of the current Iraqi regime. Last week, Turkey's Defence Minister, Sabahattin Cakmakoglu, said that Turkey had a historic role to play in Northern Iraq of safeguarding the region. This prompted a response from Massoud Barzani, the leader of the Iraqi Kurdistan Democracy Party, that any effort by Ankara to intervene militarily in Northern Iraq would result in the region being turned into the grave of the Turkish Armed Forces.

Turkey is concerned that the main opposition groups in Northern Iraq aim to establish an independent Kurdish state on Turkey's borders, a move that Ankara has repeatedly condemned as destabilising.

Reuters quoted Talabani as saying the Kurdish opposition had urged the US to give support to the 100,000 strong opposition force - mostly stationed in northern Iraq - so it could launch a military campaign to overthrow Saddam. The US government had given no response to the proposal.

"When the time comes, tens of thousands more would take up arms against the regime," Talabani told Reuters. "We told the United States things it did not like, such as that the Iraqi people should be the ones performing the regime change."

"U.S. officials have told us that they were determined to bring down the regime. But Iraq is a big country. The United States cannot control the streets and prevent internal fighting if the regime falls. It needs the opposition."

[09] The so-called Cyprus Turkish Airlines will sell its four Boeing 727/200s

According to KIBRIS (30.08.02), the so-called Cyprus Turkish Airlines has decided to sell its four Boeing 727/200 aeroplanes.

The paper says that the aeroplanes have completed their economic life, because three of them served for 26 years and one of them for 21 years. All four aeroplanes are grounded and they are not flying any more.

    [B] COMMENTARIES, EDITORIALS AND ANALYSIS

[10] Turkish Cypriot columnist supports that the number of the settlers has increased to 150.000

Ali Osman of AFRIKA (30.08.02) reports that the number of the Turkish settlers has increased to 150.000, whereas only 27.000 persons are born from Turkish Cypriot parents. According to Mr Osman there are 23.000 persons with the one parent Turkish Cypriot. Commenting on information regarding Turkey's intentions to annex the occupied areas in case the Republic of Cyprus accedes to the EU before the solution to the Cyprus problem, Ali Osman writes, inter alia, the following:

".Mehmet Ali Birant has written it. Ankara prepares new plans. It is getting ready to bind TRNC's Foreign Affairs (Ministry) to the Foreign Affairs (Ministry) of the Republic of Turkey. Rauf had given this sign before. 'The Greek Cypriots' joining the EU is not a disaster. We too will unify with Turkey', he said.

In my article yesterday I wrote that this issue lies under the fact that Denktas and Eroglu have been invited to Ankara.

Rauf gave an interview to Reuters News Agency as well. 'If the EU takes the Greek Cypriots we will hand over all the Defense and Foreign Affairs to Turkey', he said.

All those who do not even demand his removal from the post of the negotiator, no matter who they are, they are guilty.

We have no children to send to Sirnak or any other Turkish border to do their military service. .

Things cannot change by distributing announcements and talking with fear. Our will is mortgaged. We do not know how many we are. We estimated that we were sixty thousands. Now I find out that we are twenty-seven thousands. This is the number of those Turkish Cypriots, both parents of whose are Cypriots. Another twenty three thousand people's mother or father is Turkish Cypriots. The rest of the population, that is 150 thousand, consists of people who have been brought and settled here. They are transported population. They are people whose identity was taken away.

An illegal state was created with double citizenship. The one citizenship is false and the other belongs to the army. Here you are. There is a farmland for you. The annexation to Turkey threats could be intimidations against the Greek Cypriots and the EU. .".

    [11] The 28th August report

Yavuz Donat, writing in his column ''Vitrin''(Show case) in SABAH (29.08.02), refers to a thirty-page report compiled by National Security Analyst M.Faruk Demir with contributors Asil Saygioglu, Alp H Yoruk and Crisis Study Group ''Under the shadow of the multifront war: The process of the political reform''.

He says that the report was given yesterday, 28 August, to six places: To President's Office, Turkish Grand National Assembly Chairmanship, to the prime minister's Office, to the Turkish Chief of Staff, to the National Security Council (NSC) Secretariat and the USA embassy. Donat notes that Faruk Demir is the deputy chairman of the Supreme Strategy Centre, which is a Think-tank with no direct relations with the state but is not completely cut off from the state. The report is about how Turkey will wake up the very next day of the 3rd November general elections. It gives several scenarios.

The report, inter alia, refers to Cyprus at its special section as follows: This question, which lay siege to Turkey's future should definitely be solved." To this, says Donat, the report notes: "It is necessary to have, next to the strong military power, strong and non-deceitful political leadership'' .
