[01] The Turkish Cypriot leader will give lectures in Istanbul

KIBRIS newspaper (09.04.03) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, will leave for Istanbul tomorrow morning.

Tomorrow Mr Denktas will address speeches at Dedeman Hotel of the Marmara Group at 12:30 p.m. and at 3 p.m at Beykent University.

On Friday Mr Denktas will address a conference at Yeditepe University and will return to the occupied areas the same day.

KIBRIS daily also reports that Mr Denktas yesterday met with the Ambassador of the United States to Cyprus, Mr Michael Klosson, in the occupied areas.

No statements were made after the meeting.

[02] Reactions about the measures to be reportedly announced by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus towards the Turkish Cypriots

BIRLIK (09.04.03) reports that the National Unity Party (NUP) has described the measures to be reportedly announced by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus towards the Turkish Cypriots as "a hostile action", which aims at eliminating the puppet regime and turning the Turkish Cypriots into a minority.

According to the paper, NUP's administrative board met yesterday to discuss the date on which party's general assembly will take place. It was decided that the general assembly be held on 11 May 2003.

Regarding the measures to be announced by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus towards the Turkish Cypriots the party expressed the opinion that the Government of Cyprus "ignores the existence of the Turkish Cypriot community" and their so-called "state". "This is assessed as a hostile action aiming at eliminating our state and humiliate our people", argues NUP accusing the Greek Cypriot side of having "hidden intentions".

Meanwhile, commenting on the same issue ORTAM newspaper, mouthpiece of Communal Liberation Party (CLP) supports the following: "Despite the fact that he is making openings on some issues, Papadopoulos is proposing some things contrary to the spirit of the Annan plan and ignoring especially the rights given to the Turkish Cypriots by the 1960 agreements on issues such as the right to elect and be elected, the employment and the citizenship.

Denktas says to his people that they could get hold of Greek Cypriot passport and work in the Greek Cypriot side, provided that the status quo is not changed. Of course, he adds, you should hold out as one day they will recognize us.

Papadopoulos says: 'I will give you EU passport, work and food. Accept me as the Republic of Cyprus'.

Both sides are against the Annan plan. Both sides are preserving their old positions. Both sides want the Greek Cypriots to become member of the EU on 16 April. Both sides want the Turkish Cypriots to stay out of the EU on 16 April. Two enemies are singing the same song".

[03] The so-called "assembly" of the puppet regime discussed the Cyprus problem in a closed-doors session

KIBRIS (09.04.03) reports that the so-called "assembly" met yesterday and discussed the latest developments in the Cyprus problem, the Hague meeting, the Annan plan, the proposals made by the Turkish side and the package of measures to reportedly be announced by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus towards the Turkish Cypriots after 16 April.

The Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas has also attended the 3.5-hour session. The leaders of Communal Liberation Party (CLP) and Republican Turkish Party (RTP), Huseyin Angolemli and Mehmet Ali Talat did not participate in the session because they had gone to Germany in order to attend a conference regarding Cyprus. Furthermore, the so-called "MPs" of CLP boycotted the session protesting that Mr Rauf Denktas did not inform them in time regarding the developments.

Responding to questions after the session, Mr Rauf Denktas said that they had discussed the developments in the Hague, even if this took place "a little bit late" and added that no decision was taken at the session. Commenting on the report of the UN Secretary - General Kofi Annan on Cyprus, Mr Denktas noted that he is used to being accused and alleged that the two sides had the same responsibility for the collapse of the talks in the Hague.

Meanwhile, Serdar Denktas, leader of the Democratic Party (DP), said that they examined the step they are going to make on the Cyprus problem and noted that "no strategy has been determined" at the so-called "assembly". "There are only some proposals", he added. Referring to the six-point proposals of the Turkish side Mr Serdar Denktas said: "Our six-point package proposals are on the table. We as a party have a different approach on this issue. . I believe that these proposals should be taken further. There are issues, which we could apply unilaterally. We believe that these should be realized. .According to us, the Annan plan is now in the archives as a reference point. It is not possible for us to change this plan. The Greek Cypriot side does not accept this.".

When reminded about the statement of Turkey's Foreign Minister, Abdullah Gul, that the Annan plan is still on the table, Mr Denktas replied: ".The same question has been asked to Mr Gul. His answer was clear. The Government of Turkey is searching for a solution. This is not necessarily a search connected with the Annan plan. .".

Noting that there are some disagreements between the so-called "coalition partners", Mr Serdar Denktas pointed out that his party insists on the right of free movement, which is included in the six-point package measures. The issue of the passports was also discussed at the session yesterday, he concluded.

Furthermore, Ferdi Sabit Soyer, general secretary of RTP said that at the session they have once more seen that Mr Rauf Denktas and his supports have no alternative solution to the Annan plan and accused the Turkish Cypriot leader and the leaders of NUP and DP, Dervis Eroglu and Serdar Denktas of being "fighters for the non-solution".

[04] Fourteen resignations from NJP; Reactions caused due to an intervention made by Turkey's NAP leader, Devlet Bahceli

Under the title "Things in NJP have been complicated", KIBRIS (09.04.03) reports that yesterday fourteen members of the administrative council of the Nationalist Justice Party (NJP) resigned. Among those who have resigned are Oguz Kalelioglu, NJP's newly elected acting chairman and Erhan Arikli, the general secretary of the party.

Invoking reliable sources, the paper writes that a disagreement came up yesterday afternoon at the meeting of the administrative council of the party, as a result of the opinion, which had been expressed by the leader of Turkey's Nationalist Action Party (NAP), Devlet Bahceli, who said that the chairman of NJP should be a Turkish Cypriot, and not a settler from Turkey.

All members of the administrative council except the chairman of the NJP's women organization, Meral Erturk, the former deputy chairman of the party, Cetin Atalay and the council member Burhan Yirmibesoglu, have resigned.

Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference yesterday morning Mr Erhan Arikli expressed the opinion that the biggest obstacle for peace in Cyprus is the EU and the UN. Adding that all kinds of negotiations with the Greek Cypriot side should be stopped after 16 Arpil, Mr Arikli argued that the puppet regime should follow "another course". Mr Arikli said that his party opposed the return of the Varosha area to its legal owners the Greek Cypriots and added that the above-mentioned areas should be opened.
