[01] Ali Erel establishes a new party

All the local Turkish Cypriot dailies today (22.08.03) report about the establishment of a new party under the name of the Solution and EU Party. The leader of the new party is Ali Erel, the Chairman of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce.

Announcing the establishment of the new party yesterday Ali Erel said at the news conference that he would not resign as Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce.

Ali Erel said at the news conference that they have formally set up the party by submitting the SEUP's documents to the occupation regime. Asserting that following a yearlong struggle the Turkish Cypriots have finally forged a union under the SEUP by leaving aside their social and ideological differences, Erel said that the December elections would be in the nature of a referendum. He added that at the December elections they will seek votes not only for their own party but also for the Republican Turkish Party [RTP], the United Forces [UF, which is affiliated with the RTP], and the Peace and Democracy Movement [PDM]. Erel said that as a political party they support EU membership and a solution before 1 May 2004 on the basis of the Annan plan.

After the reading of SEUP's founding declaration by Mustafa Damdelen, Ali Erel replied to journalists' questions. In reply to a question as to why they are not running in the elections together with the RTP, UF, and PDM, Erel said that their aim is to win over those who will not be voting for the RTP-UF and PDM and those who have defected from the National Unity Party [NUP] and the Democratic Party [DP]. Asked whether he will resign as Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Ali Erel said he will not resign, adding that it would be wrong for the chambers and politics to turn their backs on each other, for the civilian organizations will find themselves in a difficult situation then. In reply to another question, Ali Erel said that they met several times with RTP leader Mehmet Ali Talat and Communal Liberation Party [CLP] leader Huseyin Angolemli and concluded that the best formula would be to launch a three-pronged campaign. Erel added that after the elections the SEUP would form a coalition with these two parties [RTP and CLP].

The SEUP's founding members are: Ali Erel, Mustafa Damdelen, Unsal Ozbilenler, Cahit Kaya, Turhan Beydagli, Cetin Masharoglu, Asim Dedezade, Ismail Sayi, Salih Celiker, Hasip Erel, Cetin Sadi, Ali Erdal Osmanlar, Dervis Musannif, Halil Berkut, Alpay Ertac, Ilksoy Aslim, Mehmet Sukan.

[02] The pseudo-state was invited to participate in the International Competition of Islamic Capitals

Turkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (22.08.03), reports that the pseudo-state was invited to take part in the International Competition of Islamic Capitals. The Competition is organized by the International Organization of Islamic Capitals and Cities which is based in Saudi Arabia.

As the paper reports the pseudo-state will be represented by the occupied Nicosia "Municipality", which is a member of the Organization. The Competition is a contest for written works and scientific research and aims at retaining the Islamic culture heritage of the cities and to protect and develop the Islamic culture. The prize of the competition is ten thousand USA dollars. The paper writes that the pseudostate must apply until the 27th of September in order to participate in it.

[03] Two Turkish Cypriot Trade Unions accused the parties of the pseudo-government of offering employment positions prior to the pseudoelections

Turkish Cypriot daily VATAN newspaper (22.08.03), reports that the Turkish Cypriot Public Servants´ Trade Union (KTAMS) and the so-called Custom Workers´ Union (Guc-Sen) accused the National Unity Party (NUP) and the Democratic Party (DP) the two parties of the so-called coalition government of the pseudo-state for nepotism by offering employment positions prior to the forthcoming December elections in the pseudostate.

The two trade Unions gathered yesterday in front of the so-called Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and criticized various actions of the "government".

The chairman of the KTAMS Mr Ali Seylani speaking in front of the "Ministry" strongly criticized the Denktas regime and said that appointments made to the newly "Compensation Commission" were silently realized and that recently 20 new temporary job openings for the so-called "Custom Office" were announced but the so-called official gazette, which included this job openings was not permitted to circulate.

[04] Akıncı: "We want a united Cyprus member of EU"

According to Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (22.08.03), the leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM) Mustafa Akinci ,speaking at a election gathering organized by his Movement regarding the forthcoming so-called elections in the occupied area in December, said that time is approaching for those who support the status quo to be buried in the annals of the history. He congratulated the new party established by Ali Erel and said that those who want peace and a decent life within the EU will proceed in three prong way to the parliament securing the votes of majority of the Turkish Cypriots. Akinci went on and said: "They say that the December elections will not be ordinary elections. They are right. The December elections are a chance to realize the usurped referendum right of the Turkish Cypriots. From the ballot boxes the will of the Turkish Cypriots which is peace and EU will emerge. They say that this election will be between those who support the state and those who support the EU. What kind of a state? The state that painted the largest flag on the Pendadactilos range and the state that behind that flag wants to hide all the bad things such as stealing, embezzlements and forgery etc., or the state that does not have sovereignty. Or a state that provides to its people prosperity, happiness and it has its place in the international law. Our understanding of the state and of the people is diametrically opposite to that of the people defending the status quo. Demanding EU does not mean to be hostile to the state and Turkey."

Akinci concluded by saying that the Turkish Cypriots want to govern themselves and to establish their own future.
