[01] Denktas comments on Gul^Òs statements

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (03.09.03) reports that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas, commented yesterday on the statement by Turkey^Òs deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Abdullah Gul, who said that Mr Denktas should get the support of his people.

Mr Denktas said, inter alia, the following: ^ÓMr Gul^Òs statement: ^ÑDenktas to see the Cyprus people^Òs message´ is probably reflecting the doubt deriving from the messages given by those who walk on the road of Simitis, Papadopoulos and Christofias. As it is known, these followers of Simitis, AKEL and Papadopoulos have deceived de Soto, the Americans and the British by saying: ^ÑThe people have broken off from Denktas. The great majority of the people is with us^Ò. The same doubt has been created within some circles in Turkey as well. We know that the great majority of the people supports the national cause. The elections will confirm this. In fact, this is the worry of those who walk on the road of AKEL, Simitis and Papadopoulos. ^ÅMr Gul has given the message that Anatolia is with Denktas and his national cause. ^ÅI thank Mr Gul for his statement, which stresses this reality. There is no reason to doubt about the future decision of the Turkish Cypriots. We guarantee this. ^Å^Ô.

[02] Talat says that Denktas considers himself to be the same as Ataturk

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (03.09.03) reports that Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP), has supported that the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas considers himself to be the same as Kemal Ataturk, who had ensured the support of the people of Anatolia and began his struggle.

Talking yesterday on a radio programme, Mr Talat noted that the views, which Mr Denktas supports and describes as his ^Ónational cause^Ô, do not promise bright future both to the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey. Mr Talat accused Mr Denktas of trying to create internal confusion in Turkey and of making fun of the EU accession process of the Turkish people. Mr Talat added:

^Ó^ÅHe says that he will get the support of the people of Anatolia and start waging a struggle. The person who got the support of Anatolia and began a struggle was Ataturk. Now he began puting himself into the place of Ataturk. However, he has received the answer he deserved. And the Turkish Cypriots are happy for this, because our people do not consider Denktas to be one of them any more. The Turkish Cypriot people want peace and solution. They want to be by the side of those who struggle for taking our place in Europe together with the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of our political equality^Å^Ô.

[03] Akinci: ^ÓThe Turkish Cypriots first will get rid of Denktas and then of his parrots^Ô

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (03.09.03) reports that Mustafa Akinci, leader of the Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM), has said that the Turkish Cypriots are impatiently waiting for the December ^Óelections^Ô in order to get rid of the Denktas policy, which led them into an impasse.

In a written statement issued yesterday, Mr Akinci supports that while the ^Óelections^Ô come closer, the Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktas is worried because he does not trust the Turkish Cypriots and he knows that they do not approve his ^Óoutworn policy^Ô. Referring to accusations by Mr Denktas against his wife, Mrs Meral Akinci (translator^Òs note: Mr Denktas accused Mrs Akinci and Mrs Oya Talat of taking money from ^Óforeign circles^Ô to act against the occupation regime), Mr Akinci added, inter alia, the following:

^Ó^ÅAs through throwing mad on us was not enough, he (Denktas) began using the name of my wife, Meral Akinci. KAYAD, the chairman of which is my wife, is one of the civilian organizations, which are seriously serving our community. KAYAD has used some of the funds provided by UNOPS to other civilian organization. The ^ÑTRNC^Ò government was informed about this. ^ÅLet God protect us from Denktas^Ò slanders. However, the most correct thing to do is to be saved in December with people^Òs votes from the National Unity Party and the Democratic Party which are doing nothing else but being the parrots of Denktas and right afterwards we shall be saved from the negotiator Denktas, who produces no result. After such a development Denktas will not be able to get the support of Anatolia, because such a development will pave the way not only for the Turkish Cypriots, but for the people of Anatolia as well^Ô.

[04] The occupation regime claims that some of the books sent to occupied Rizokarpaso elementary school contain hostile phrases

Turkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (03.09.03) reports that the occupation regime claims that 41 out of the 125 books that were sent to occupied Rizokarpaso elementary school by the Government of Cyprus, contain hostile elements.

As the paper alleges 41 of the books, which were sent to the occupied school for the academic year 2003-2004, encourage the ^Óhostile feelings^Ô, ^Óseed hatred and hostility^Ô and incite the hostility among the two communities of Cyprus.

The so-called Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Defense along with the United Nations Peace Keeping Forces will look into the issue, the paper concludes.
