[A] NEWS ITEMS[01] Turkish General repeats who the boss is in occupied Cyprus. Talat seconds the General's viewsUnder the title "Not a single soldier will leave unless there is a solution", Kibris newspaper (26/01/05) covers in its front page the statements made by the Turkish Land Forces Commander, General Yasar Buyukkanit, who is visiting occupied Cyprus illegally to inspect the thousands of occupation troops stationed in northern Cyprus since the Turkish invasion of 1974.The Turkish General yesterday met with the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktas. During the meeting the Turkish General declared that the Turkish army will not terminate the occupation of northern Cyprus before a solution. (For the general's statements see Turkish Mass Media Bulletin No. 16/05, 25.01.05). Mr Denktas thanked the Turkish General for his statements and stressed that drawing strength from the motherland they are trying to protect their independence and that their target is to make this independence the basis of permanent peace. On his part, in statements after meeting General Buyukkanit, the pseudo-prime minister of Turkey's regime in occupied Cyprus, Mr Mehmet Ali Talat, seconded the General's views alleging that discussion of the withdrawal of the Turkish troops is extremely dangerous, adding: "The Cyprus problem was not created by the presence of the Turkish army in Cyprus. The Turkish troops are on the island because of the Cyprus problem and only its solution will bring the issue of the existence of the Turkish troops on the agenda. Any discussion of this issue outside this framework is extremely dangerous". [02] The leader of PDM describes as justified the view that northern Cyprus is under Turkey's controlTurkish Cypriot daily KIBRIS newspaper (26/01/05) reports that the leader of Peace and Democracy Movement (PDM), Mr Mustafa Akinci, in a press conference held yesterday at the party headquarter, said that the understanding that the world has for the Turkish Cypriots must be changed. He added: "When the world looks from the outside, it views north Cyprus as a piece of territory controlled by Turkey and there is a situation that justifies this perception. Because the Turkish Cypriots are not using their right to speak in their own institutions adequately. This state of affairs should be changed quickly".During the press conference, Mr Akinci also explained the policy to be pursued by his party. He noted that his party launched the election campaign through the slogan 'Hot politics,' which is a clear expression for developing proposals and creating solutions. Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriots demand their right, not the reward for the affirmative vote they cast in the referendum, Akinci said that this is what the party is advocating. He noted that the Turkish Cypriots have as much right to have relations with the world as the Greek Cypriots, declaring that his party will continue to struggle for an end to the Turkish Cypriot "people's" "isolation" from the world. Akinci also remarked that a policy formulated only along the lines of ending the "isolation" is not sufficient. Steps can be taken to contribute to peace on the island, Akinci said, adding that doors can be opened for more steps, the Turkish Cypriot side can also join the demand to sweep the mines, the conciliation committee envisaged in the Annan Plan can be implemented, and proposals can be made with regard to the closed area of Varosha. He also said that the wait-and-see policy will not lead anywhere, adding that the Cyprus issue has been left unresolved for years and there is no more time to lose. [03] Gul to visit China. Busy diplomatic traffic by Turkey in January and FebruaryAnkara Anatolia news agency (25/01/05) reported from Ankara that Turkey will have busy diplomacy traffic at the end of January and in February 2005, sources said on Tuesday.Diplomatic sources indicated that Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul would go to Poland on January 27th to attend ceremonies to mark the 60th anniversary of liberation of the ''Auschwitz'' concentration camp. After visiting China between January 31st and February 6th, Gul will go to Afghanistan on February 11th to attend the ceremony marking Turkey's take over the command of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). He is also expected to meet Afghan officials during his stay in this country. Gul is expected to be in the Belgian capital of Brussels to attend the NATO Foreign Ministers' Meeting to be held at the end of February. On the other hand, Turkey will host some dignitaries in February. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to arrive in Turkish capital Ankara on February 1st, while Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is scheduled to visit Turkey between February 2nd and 3rd. Tunisian Foreign Minister Habib Ben Yahia will be in Turkey between February 8th and 10th, while Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri will be visiting Ankara between February 9th and 11th. [04] Kutlay Erk is meeting today with former Danish Prime-Minister RasmussenTurkish Cypriot daily YENI DUZEN newspaper (26.01.05) reports that Mr Kutlay Erk, the so-called mayor of the occupied part of Lefkosia, and Responsible of the foreign affairs of the Republican Turkish Party-United Forces, is meeting today in Brussels with Mr Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, former Prime-Minister of Denmark and chairman of the Socialist Group of the European Parliament.Mr Erk is in Brussels having contacts in the framework of diplomatic efforts for the lifting of the "isolation" of the Turkish Cypriots and for the taking of steps regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem. In addition, as the paper writes, Mr Erk, who visited Hungary with his family during the holidays of Kurban Bayram, had a meeting there with the Mayor of Budapest Mr Gabor Demzsky. During the meeting the two men exchanged views regarding the Cyprus problem and the municipality of Budapest and occupied Lefkosia.
