[01] Akinci: TANAP should constitute an example for Eastern Mediterranean

Turkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris newspaper (13.06.18) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci has argued that the energy resources in Eastern Mediterranean should be jointly used just like it happened in the case of "Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline" project (TANAP), because "otherwise the possibility of escalation of tension exists".

Addressing yesterday TANAP's inauguration ceremony in Eskisehir, Akinci said the reasonable thing to do is to use these energy resources in such a manner which secures that they will contribute to cooperation and peace and added that "this is the way by which all sides will gain".

Akinci reiterated also the allegation that the shortest and cheapest route, which could be completed faster than any other option, is to transfer these energy resources to Europe through Turkey, something which will create a network of cooperation and contribute to peace and stability, in parallel to the economic benefits, which it will bring. "Our biggest wish is for everybody to be inspired by the economic cooperation spirit and political perspective brought to surface by ANAP", he claimed.

Referring to the fact that Azeri President Ilham Aliyef described Turkey as their "sister country", Akinci alleged that the "TRNC", as he described the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus, is also Azerbaijan's "sister country", as they are sad with the Azeri sorrows and rejoice with their happiness.

Turkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (13.06.18) reports that Akinci visited Eskisehir upon an invitation by the Turkish President and that self-styled minister of energy, Ozdil Nami also participated in the ceremony as he had been invited by Turkish Minister of Energy, Berat Albayrak.

[02] Erkmen alleges that it is not possible to return to Titina Loizidou her property

Under the title "Return of the properties is not possible, compensation or exchange could be made", Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (13.06.18) reports that Ayfer Said Erkmen, chairman of the so-called Immovable Property Commission (IPC) established by Turkey in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus has argued that the "commission" had repeatedly invited Greek Cypriot refugee Titina Loizidou to apply for concluding the case as regards her property in occupied Keryneia, but it received no reply to its calls. In a written statement issued yesterday Erkmen recalled that Turkey, protesting to the fact that the Loizidou case has not closed for the past 20 years, announced that it withdraws from the meetings of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe and that it will not discuss and recognize any decision taken by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) regarding Cyprus until the Loizidou case is closed. < /p>

Erkmen argued that on 16 January 2007 the "IPC" sent a letter to Loidizou's lawyer inviting him to apply to the "commission" under the "law 67/2005". He claimed that in spite of the fact that they received no reply, they showed "good faith" and carried out an investigation regarding Loizidou's ten immovable properties, which are located in occupied upper Keryneia. He argued that in the investigation held by the "commission" it was established that 9 of the above-mentioned 10 properties were empty plots on 20 July 1974, when the Turkish army invaded Cyprus, and that the remaining property, on which the plaintiff possessed a 1/36 share, had a half completed structure constructed on it.

He added that after 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the properties in question had been given to Turkish Cypriots in exchange for property they had left in the government- controlled area of the island and that homes had been constructed on the empty plots.

Erkmen noted that Loizidou's lawyer had been informed of the findings through letters sent on November 20, 2007 and February 27, 2008. He said that the letters informed Loizidou that under "paragraphs 1 and 2" of "article 8" of the "law No 67/2005", her property could not be returned, that only compensation or exchange could be made and that compensation for loss of use could be paid, if she demanded so.

[03] Turkish Cypriot nationalist "organizations" evaluate the "IPC's decision" on the Skourides case

Under the title: "Threats for conflict from the nationalist front", Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika newspaper (13.06.18) reports that eight Turkish Cypriot nationalist organizations in the occupied area of Cyprus, amongst them the TMT Association, issued a joint declaration, reacting for the recent "Immovable property commission's decision" ("IPC"), to return to the Greek Cypriot owner, Nikolaos Skourides his property as the occupied village Larnakas tis Lapythou.

In the joint declaration signed by the "TMT association", the "national council", the "national people's movement", the "martyr's union in occupied Kokkina", the "retired police association", and other "organizations", the "nationalist organizations" described the "IPC's decision" on the Skourides case as problematic and "a decision that will cause conflicts".

"Receiving such decisions before reaching to a solution is extremely dangerous and does not serve peace", the statement claimed, pointing out that the property and territory issues should be solved globally and as a whole. "It has become clear from this first incident that without security personal solutions will cause problems. Moreover, the Greek Cypriot side's insistence on zero troops and zero guarantees verifies that the security problem has not been solved", said the statement.

The eight "organizations" described further the "IPC decision" as a dangerous one which will cause problems. "This is a precedent decision and there is the impression that it is a part of a well-broaden plan of the Greek Cypriots", the statement alleged, adding that "finally the residents in Larnakas tis Lapythou started reacting and resisting".

[04] New figures on the number of students at the "universities" in the occupied area of Cyprus

Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen newspaper (13.06.18) reports that according to figures announced by the "director" of the "department of higher education and foreign affairs", Zeki Ozturkler, in the last four years, 70% of the graduate students from high schools entered to "universities".

Ozturkler stated that an average of 23,000 new students register at "universities" every year and 10,000 students graduate. He claimed further that the number of students at the occupation regime "universities" at the moment has reached 101,000. 56,000 out of them are coming from Turkey, 12,000 from the "TRNC" and 30,000 from third countries.

According to the figures provided by Ozturkler, the students who "study" at the occupation regime's "universities" today are coming from 145 different countries. According to Ozturkler, following are the number of students from different countries:

[05] Application to UNESCO for undersea Salamis ruins

Turkish Cypriot daily Havadis newspaper (13.06.18) reports that the so-called municipality of occupied Agios Sergios village has undertaken an initiative for including the part of ancient Salamis ruins which is under the sea, in UNESCO's Global Cultural Heritage. Within the framework, the "municipality" assigned Nihat Ozdal, curator of Gaziantep Undersea Museum, with the duty of carrying out a study on this issue. Ozdal completed the file and submitted it to UNESCO.

Katip Demir, so-called mayor of occupied Agios Sergios, stated yesterday that in case their application is accepted, the name of Agios Sergios and the "TRNC" will be heard in the whole world. He added that three undersea museums exist in the world and that this will be the fourth one.

[01] TANAP gas pipeline project goes live

Under the title "Dubbed the 'Silk Road of Energy,' TANAP begins gas delivery", Turkish daily Sabah newspaper (12.06.18, https://www.dailysabah.com/energy/2018/06/12/dubbed-the-silk-road-of-energy-tanap-begins-gas-delivery) reports that named as the Silk Road of Energy, the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) started operations Tuesday at a grand inauguration ceremony in Eskisehir. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci were present at the event along with Energy Ministers and the project's partner representatives.

Speaking at the TANAP inauguration ceremony, Erdogan drew attention to the effective and fast construction process of the project, emphasizing that the harmony and synergy among producers, transit countries and consuming markets as well as companies have expedited the process. "TANAP is the symbol for multilateral partnerships," Erdogan said and added that it is the most concrete indicator of the approach to energy not as a source of conflict but as a basis for cooperation. (…)

The President also stated that the first gas delivery to Greece will start in June 2019.

Delivering an address at the ceremony, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said, "TANAP is the victory of Turkey and Azerbaijan". President Aliyev highlighted that Turkey and Azerbaijan are co-writing the energy history of the 21st century. (…)

Aliyev explained that the Southern Gas Corridor project consists of four major projects, and three out of them, including exploration of Shah Deniz-2 field, Southern Caucasus Gas Pipeline, and TANAP have been realized, whereas TAP will soon be launched.

Akinci pointed to the spirit of partnership in the TANAP project, expressing hope for the same spirit to prevail in the Eastern Mediterranean, where the "TRNC" (the breakaway regime in the occupied area of the Republic of Cyprus) and the "Greek Cypriot Administration" (as he refers to the Republic of Cyprus) are at odds over hydrocarbon resources. "Using resources with peaceful models are benefiting everyone instead of turning them into reasons for conflict and tension. Its geographical position has made Turkey an ideal energy hub for transferring rich resources of the East to the West," Akinci said. (…)

"TANAP is about energy security, the energy security of Turkey, Azerbaijan, Europe and Ukraine as it will diversify the gas market on the continent," Poroshenko said, adding that Ukraine aims to purchase Azerbaijani gas through Georgia or an extension of the pipeline from Bulgaria and Romania.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Berat Albayrak stressed that TANAP will further boost Turkey's key position in global energy cooperation, while ensuring supply security for the countries to which it provides gas. (…)

[02] US says neighbouring countries can find a way for the use of hydrocarbon resources in a win-win commercial situation

Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (12.06.18, http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/us-sees-tanap-universally-good-for-turkey-europe-133192) reported that the United States has expressed very strong support for the trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline Project (TANAP) that will carry natural gas from Azerbaijan to the European continent via Turkey, describing the $8.5 billion-worth project as a strong addition to the energy security of regional countries, including Europe.

"TANAP is pretty much universally good. It's good for Azerbaijan, good for Turkey. Once the TAP [Trans Adriatic Pipeline Project] is built, it will also be good for Europe," Sandra Oudkirk, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of State told a group of reporters in Ankara on June 12. She came to Turkey to attend the inauguration ceremony of TANAP on behalf of the U.S. administration. (…)

When asked about Turkey's energy deals with Russia that do include the making of the Turkish Stream, a dual-pipeline project that will carry Russian natural gas to both Turkey and to the European markets via Turkey, Oudkirk underlined the need to parse out these two different lines of the pipeline. "We are opposed to the diversionary pipelines," the official stressed, citing the second line of the pipeline that originally aims to reach certain European markets and to by-pass Ukrainian territory. "They don't make sense for many reasons and they have many disadvantages for both Ukrainian and other European recipients of gas," Oudkirk said. "We have publicly said that will be very bad for Ukraine," she added.

The Deputy Assistant Secretary also responded to questions on recent developments in the east Mediterranean that have created tension between Turkey and "Greek Cyprus" (Republic of Cyprus), as well as other countries in the region that have recently explored vast offshore natural reserves.

"Neighbouring countries, even with historical animosities, can find a way for the production, sale and use of hydrocarbon resources in a win-win commercial situation," Oudkirk said, recalling a deal between Israel and Jordan on natural gas.

"We certainly hope that the same philosophy can extend through the eastern Mediterranean and other zones. The Mediterranean is not the only part of the world where hydrocarbon resources are transboundary and within disputed exclusive economic zones," she said.

"Fundamentally, the U.S. believes the countries should be able to exploit hydrocarbon resources in their specific economic zone," said Oudkirk, recalling Turkey's plans to start their own drilling of hydrocarbon reserves in the Mediterranean.

[03] Turkey's Defence Minister: "Turkish army to remain in N. Iraq until mission ends"

According to Ankara Anatolia news agency (12.06.18, https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/turkish-army-to-remain-in-n-iraq-until-mission-ends-/1172716), Turkish armed forces will remain in northern Iraq until the terrorists are cleared from the region, Turkey's Defence Minister Nurettin Canikli said on Tuesday at Anadolu Agency's Editors' Desk in Ankara

He said the latest round of operations in northern Iraq differed from the previous ones in that Turkish troops for the first time had set up bases there. "We will be there [in northern Iraq] permanently until we will wipe out the terror completely".

Canikli also said that Iran has expressed "very clearly" their support to Turkey's anti-terror operations targeting all the terror elements in northern Iraq, including Qandil region.

More than 500 terrorists have been neutralized in northern Iraq since the beginning of 2018, he noted.

"They [PKK terrorists] are staging attacks from there [northern Iraq] against our country. There are some serious infiltrations [into Turkey]. It is a quite mountainous area [...] where terror and terrorists can easily move."

The Defence Minister also claimed that the army has been carrying out the operation without harming any country's territorial integrity. (…)

[04] Pro-Kurdish Democratic Peoples' Party says that the choice for the presidential election is either Erdogan's regime or democracy

Turkish daily Cumhuriyet newspaper (13.06.18) reports that the co-chairman of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Peoples' Party (HDP) Sezai Temelli stated that it is very possible for the Turkish opposition to act jointly in the second round of the June 24 Presidential elections in Turkey.

In an interview to the paper, Temeli stated that a protocol could be signed between the opposition parties for the issue. But as he said the details of such a protocol are not important. What matters is the choice in front of them which is: "Erdogan regime or democracy"?

He also referred to his party candidate, the imprisoned co-chairman of the party Selahattin Demirtas who runs his election campaign from prison and added that his message can reach the voters only via social media while his opponents enjoy media coverage. "But his message reach the people", he said.

Replying to a question he confirmed that both HDP and Demirtas have been a target of increased attacks by Erdogan lately who treats them as enemies and he notes that it is very important for that the HDP not to fail enter the Parliament. He however said that they are positive that the party will overpass the 10% threshold and they have no worries over this issue.
