According to Oktay, any possible solution efforts that will be exerted in the forthcoming period could be successful only if they are based on the existing realities on the island.Addressing the celebrations on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus in the occupied part of Nicosia, Oktay described the Turkish invasion of Cyprus as a turning point for the Turkish world and claimed that it contributed to "peace and stability" in the area. He further alleged that on 20 July 1974, guarantor power Turkey showed the whole world that it will be by the Turkish Cypriots' side under all conditions. "The TRNC, with its government, parliament, all its institutions and organizations is capable of offering an important contribution to peace and stability in the area as a modern state", he alleged adding that there is absolutely no obstacle which they could not overcome as long as they preserve their unity in this "national cause". He went on claiming that: "Various negotiating processes have been launched for more than half a century to find a solution to the Cyprus problem, which emerged with the seizure by the Greek Cypriots of the partnership state established in 1960 three years after its establishment. Every time, the Turkish Cypriot side and Turkey exerted sincere efforts for finding a just, lasting and sustainable solution […]" Arguing that in 2004 the Turkish side showed to the international community its will for finding a solution, Oktay referred to the negotiating process which started in 2008 and ended with the International Conference on Cyprus last July. He claimed that the Turkish side was again the one which exhibited a constructive stance during this process and alleged: "Unfortunately, the Greek Cypriot side continues seeing itself as the sole owner of the island and does not accept sharing the political power with the Turkish Cypriot people. In spite of all our efforts, this situation caused the failure of the process which aimed at the establishment of a new federal partnership […]. This Greek Cypriot mentality, which aims to integrate the Turkish Cypriots as a de facto minority to their current state, has not changed within this one year which passed since the Cyprus Conference. We follow with concern the statements made recently by the Greek Cypriot side on this issue. We understand that it would be absolutely not realistic to expect a change of this mentality which is far from being constructive. Unfortunately, the Greek Cypriot side does not envisage a future on the basis of political equality with the Turkish Cypriots. Any possible solution efforts that will be exerted in the forthcoming period could be successful only if they are based on the existing realities on the island. Of course every kind of solution could be found through negotiations and diplomacy as a result of consensus. Recalling the statement made by Turkish President Erdogan during his recent illegal visit to the occupied area of Cyprus on 10 July, 2018, Oktay reiterated that Turkey will never turn a blind eye to the Turkish Cypriots' becoming the "victims" of the non-solution. "It will never be allowed for the Turkish Cypriots to become a minority in a Greek Cypriot state", he claimed adding that Turkey as a "motherland" and guarantor power will continue its efforts for finding a solution and for strengthening stability in Eastern Mediterranean. Reiterating that they will continue being by the Turkish Cypriots' side under all conditions, Oktay argued that they all know that Turkey has the will and the power to increase the standard of living of the inhabitants in the occupied area of Cyprus and argued that the international community should end what he called as the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots. Oktay claimed also that they are proud with the contribution of Turkey to the economic development of the Turkish Cypriots during the past few years in spite of all obstacles and added that they will continue the projects for raising the standard of living of the Turkish Cypriots. Congratulating the Turkish Cypriots for their "successes" in the fields of tourism and higher education, he noted that more than 100,000 students from 131 countries study today in the 16 "universities", which operate in the occupied area of Cyprus and that 2,000,000 passengers travel every year through the illegal airport in occupied Tymbou. Oktay also argued that with the water they had transferred from Turkey they have to a great extent solved the drinking water problem in the occupied area of Cyprus and that they continue their efforts for that water to be used in the agriculture in the occupied Morfou and Mesaoria plains. He said that their target is to turn the occupied area of Cyprus into an attraction center in the Mediterranean within the next 5-10 years. "The freedom, justice, prosperity and security of the Turkish Cypriots are a national cause for us", he argued. (I/Ts.) [02] Akinci reiterates that they will not accept open-ended talks or become part of a negotiation process without timetablesIllegal Turkish Cypriot Bayrak television (20.07.17) broadcast that Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci reiterated that it should be understood that recognizing one of the two sides on the island as the sole legal owner of the island and isolating the other community will not serve efforts to reach a solution but only the continuation of the status quo.Addressing a ceremony prior to the military parade in the occupied part of Nicosia within the framework of the 'celebrations' for the 44th anniversary of the 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of Cyprus, Akinci argued that since that day 44 years have passed and reaching a just solution with all sides in Cyprus would have been the best, but the opportunities have emerged over the years and have been wasted. Akinci, reading his yesterday address, argued that his intention was not to use this speech to accuse or criticize the Greek Cypriot, but he felt that it was necessary to share with the public some facts. He stressed that in order to create the conditions of co-existing, it should be understood first that cooperation and building confidence must be safeguarded. However, Akinci argued that a real transformation of mentality in the Greek Cypriot side is needed for this, adding that he repeatedly underlined the importance of this and unfortunately they do not want to listen. Then, he referred to some incidents that had caused tension between the two sides in Cyprus, as well as the latest debate on the "glossary for journalism in Cyprus". Referring to the upcoming visit to Cyprus by the UN Secretary General's consultant on Cyprus, Akinci argued that the UN envoy's mission was a temporary one aimed at probing the possibility of resuming talks and drawing a new road map for the period ahead. "Ms Lute is not a new permanent advisor…in other words she is not a new Espen Barth Eide", he stressed, adding that the UN envoy will also be holding contacts with three guarantor powers as well. Noting that the Turkish Cypriot side will continue to pursue the principle of equality, freedom and security in the period ahead, Akinci reiterated that they will not however accept open-ended, endless talks or become part of a process without deadlines or timeframes. Stressing that their strategic choice, of course, is a settlement in Cyprus, but this is not only up to them, Akinci argued that "their efforts to develop their country's economy and democracy will continue in the meantime". (DPs) [03] Turkish Presidency: Turkey will never allow fait accompli in CyprusTurkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (20.07.18, http://www.kibrispostasi.com/c35-KIBRISHABERLERI/n257880-tc-cumhurbaskanligindan-kritik-kibris-mesaji-turkiye-hicbir) reports that Ibrahim Kalin, Spokesman of the Turkish Presidency, has argued that Turkey will never allow fait accompli in Cyprus. In his message on the occasion of the 44 anniversary from the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, Kalin alleged: "Turkey, as a guarantor power, will use until the end its rights deriving from the international law, will never allow a fait accompli and will always be by the side of our Cypriot soul brothers. In the current situation, the international community should stand by the side of the Turkish Cypriots, who in every opportun ity take a stance in favor of the establishment of lasting peace and tranquility on the island and exhibit a clear stance against the Greek Cypriot side which pushes away the solution proposals".Meanwhile, according to illegal Bayrak television (20.07.18, http://www.brtk.net/erdogandan-kibris-baris-harekati-mesaji/), in his message on the same occasion, President Erdogan argued that they will not allow for the Turkish Cypriots to become the victims of the non-solution in Cyprus. He alleged the following: "The desirable results could not be achieved in the negotiations because of the stance of the Greek Cypriot side. Reaching a solution in Cyprus will contribute to stability in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey will always continue being by the side of its Turkish Cypriot brothers […]" (I/Ts.) [04] Yildirim's message on the anniversary of the Turkish invasion to CyprusTurkish Cypriot daily Star Kibris newspaper (20.07.18) reports that the Speaker of the Turkish National Assembly (TBMM) Binali Yildirim, in his message on the occasion of the 44th anniversary of the Turkish invasion to Cyprus, alleged that a solution to the Cyprus problem will be possible providing that the two communities will have equal rights and only by establishing an approach for a fair governance.In his message, Yildirim reiterated the allegation that Turkey carried out the "peace operation" in Cyprus 44 years ago, as he called, the Turkish invasion, in order to prevent the "massacre against the Turks living in the island" and the unification of the island with Greece. Yildirim further claimed that with the "peace operation" of Turkey in Cyprus, the Turkish Cypriot's safety was ensured while at the same time he alleged that a new environment with "two states with equal rights" procured. Yildirim alleged further the following: "Our sated has always supported all efforts for a solution, which were taking place in a way that would secure the rights of the TRNC deriving from the international agreements. On this occasion, I would like to congratulate once again the TRNC for the 20th of July peace and freedom day. I wish to our Turkish Cypriot brother propensity and brightness as future members of the international community. […]". (AK) [05] "Why Akinci cannot go to 'brother country' Azerbaijan?"Under the above title, columnist Sami Ozuslu writes in Turkish Cypriot daily Yeni Duzen (20.07.18) about a conversation he held with the Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Hikmet Haciyev at the side of Organization for Security and Stability in Europe for South Caucasus Media that took place in Tiflis.Writing that "when two countries are brother countries means that someone is welcome in open arms (to each country), Ozuslu writes that this has no meaning or importance when it comes to international relations. Ozuslu asked Haciyev to confirm information that the Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan wanted to pay his first visit after his election to the occupied area of Cyprus but Azerbaijan did not grant permission for a direct flight to be conducted from Baku to the breakaway regime, Haciyev said: "I honestly have not this kind of information. However, I see no difference, whether he first visited Cyprus or he visited Azerbaijan. Both of them are Turkish brothers; are they not? We are all brothers; we must protect our brotherhood and display it to everyone". Asked why there are no direct flights from Baku to (illegal) Tympou since they are "brothers", Haciyev stated that there are technical issues on the matter. "There is an honest and strategic dialogue between Turkey and Azerbaijan on every issue. We talk about this issue brotherly as like every other strategic issue. Azerbaijan has important sensitivities and brother country Turkey realizes this very well". Asked why the Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci cannot visit Baku, and Azerbaijan President Aliyev cannot visit the breakaway regime, Haciyev stated that everything has its own time. "God willing the time for this will come too. However, when you are in Baku's avenues you can see the flag of Cyprus (TRNC). Azerbaijan understands very well the problems of our brothers who live in Cyprus. We have an open and honest dialogue on this issue, as in any other issues, with Turkey and I very well understand the sensitivities of our Cypriot brothers as well". "You understand our sensitivities, you say that we are brothers, still you do not recognize the TRNC", Ozuslu told Haciyev who replied the following: "Azerbaijan has sensitivities as well. Azerbaijan is a country that faced an attack. It has occupied soil. There is the Karabag issue and other issue. Our brothers in Cyprus are very much aware of this kind of sensitivities that we have". (CS) [06] The missing Syrian migrants after the shipwreck in occupied Yialousa have not been found yetTurkish Cypriot daily Kibris newspaper (20.07.18) under the title: "The missing migrants have not been found", reports that the "coast guard command" of the occupation regime in cooperation with Turkey continued yesterday the search and rescue efforts both in the air and in the sea in the area where the boat with around 150 Syrian migrants sunk off the coast of occupied Yialousa.According to the paper, despite all efforts, the 27 missing migrants were not found. Meanwhile, the rescued Syrian migrants were sent to Turkey with a boat belonging to the "coast guard command" and had a thorough medical examination. The paper recalls that as a result of the shipwreck, 104 migrants were rescued, 19 died and 27 are still missing. (AK) [07] Paris Hilton "visit" in the occupied are of Cyprus postponed for one weekTurkish Cypriot daily Kibris Postasi newspaper (20.07.18) reports that the Limak Cyprus Deluxe Hotel in occupied Vokolida in the Famagusta district, announced that the US celebrity Paris Hilton, who was set to attend a celebration party at the hotel on June 28, postpone the date for the 4th of August.According to the paper, Hilton's family asked for her visit to be postponed for one week since the US celebrity will be attending another event in the USA. The Limak Cyprus Deluxe Hotel hotel was built in the area of Vokolida in the Famagusta district and covers an area of 200,000 square meters. (AK) [B] Turkish Press[01] Turkey condemns Israel's controversial 'Jewish nation-state' lawUnder the title "Jewish nation-state bill disregards norms of universal law, Palestinians' rights, Turkey says", Turkish daily Sabah newspaper (20.07.18, https://www.dailysabah.com/diplomacy/2018/07/19/jewish-nation-state-bill-disregards-norms-of-universal-law-palestinians-rights-turkey-says) reports that the Jewish nation-state bill passed by the Israeli parliament early Thursday disregards the norms of universal law and the rights of Palestinian-origin Israeli citizens, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement."The law announcing Jerusalem, occupied by Israel, as the capital city is null and void in the eyes of the international community," the Ministry said, adding that promoting Jewish settlements that have been repeatedly deemed unlawful by the United Nations is also "unacceptable". Giving the right of self-determination only to Jews is "the product of an outdated and discriminatory mentality" and the law "eliminates the vision of a two-state solution", the Ministry warned. The Ministry also called on the international community to respond to Israel's bid to cover up ongoing occupant and unlawful activities in Palestine. Vice President Fuat Oktay also lashed out at the bill and said it hurts the rule of law and cannot be accepted by the Republic of Turkey. Presidency Spokesperson Ibrahim Kal?n also criticized the bill, saying that Turkey condemns the move in the strongest terms and it is unacceptable to accept this racist step aiming to legally erase the people of Palestine from their homeland. The controversial legislation officially defines Israel as the "national homeland of the Jewish people". The law, which passed with a 62-55 backing, is defined as a "basic law," granting it quasi-constitutional status. (…) [02] Turkish court sentences Cumhuriyet journalist to two years in jailAccording to Turkish daily Hurriyet Daily News (19.07.18, http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/turkish-court-sentences-cumhuriyet-journalist-to-two-years-in-jail-134757), a Turkish court sentenced a daily Cumhuriyet reporter to more than two years in jail on July 19 over charges of making people potential targets for militant groups through her reporting, the paper said.The case was triggered by an article written by Canan Coskun last September about prosecutors' questioning detained lawyers for two hunger-striking teachers allegedly linked to the far-leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Army-Front (DHKP-C) militant group, viewed as a terror network by Turkey. The court found out that Coskun, who covered Istanbul courts as her beat, made "people involved in the fight against terrorism a target," Cumhuriyet said. A lawyer for Coskun told the court the naming of a prosecutor in that article did not amount to making that person a target and denied the charges against her, rights group Amnesty International reported on Twitter. "Another punishment for press freedom," main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) lawmaker Sezgin Tanr?kulu, who attended the hearing, wrote on Twitter. "Writing a story and being a journalist is sufficient for a court to take a 'negative view,'" said Tanr?kulu. In April, a Turkish court sentenced 14 Cumhuriyet staffers to jail on charges of terrorism and supporting the network of Fethullah Gulen, a U.S.-based cleric blamed for organizing an attempted coup on July 15, 2016. Since the attempted putsch, more than 120 journalists have been detained and more than 180 media outlets have closed on suspicion of links to the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization (FETO). Free speech advocacy group Reporters Without Borders in April ranked Turkey 157 out of 180 countries in its annual report on global press freedom and estimated about 90% of Turkey's newspaper coverage is pro-government.
