[01] Centre-left Italian government
ROME - Italian prime minister Romano Prodi was sworn into office on Saturday
to head Italy's 55th government since World War Two and the first to include
members of what was formerly the communist party. Prodi would like to reshape
Italy into a German-style federal republic and give himself the power of
Bonn's chancellor to strengthen Italy's weak executive branch ITALY-PRODI-
REFORMS).
[02] Dini and EMU deadline
ROME - New foreign minister Lamberto Dini said Italy might miss the deadline
for joining the first wave of countries into the third stage of European
monetary and economic union by a year, but did not think this would be a
disaster.
[03] Britain to give EU more BSE plans
BRUSSELS - Britain will propose an extended slaughter scheme to curb mad cow
disease to the European Union executive Commission on Monday and is ready to
accept new terms to lift an export ban on gelatine, tallow and semen, British
officials said.
[04] Tietmeyer and EMU softening
FRANKFURT - Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer said on Friday any weakening
of criteria for membership of the planned single European currency would be
penalised by world financial markets.
[05] EU denies Mostar vote delayed
ZAGREB - The European Union administrator in Mostar on Saturday denied
comments by an aide that May 31 elections to help reunify the Bosnian city
were off, but the vote appeared awash in trouble.
[06] OECD meets on jobs and growth
PARIS - OECD Ministers will grapple with mass unemployment and securing
sustainable economic growth at their annual meeting here this week but a
diplomatic row over tightening U.S. sanctions against Cuba could sour the
mood.

STRASBOURG - The parliamentary assembly of the Council of Europe is to
consider Armenia's bid for membership of the 39-nation body which monitors
democracy and human rights on the continent, the council said on Friday.

BRUSSELS - EU industry ministers meeting begins at 1200 GMT; discussions on
third multiannual programme for small and medium-sized enterprises in the
European Union (1997-2000); Commissioner Van Miert oral presentation on
competition policy report (1995).
BRUSSELS - EU farm ministers meeting begins at 1300 GMT (first of two days);
discussions on the organisation of the fruit and vegetable market, BSE.
BRUSSELS - Euro-Mediterranean conference on economic and industrial
partnership (and Tuesday); Commissioner for Relations with the Mediterranean
Manuel Marin and Industrial Affairs Commissioner Martin Bangemann attend.
