[01] Mondale hopeful on Japan chip deal
TOKYO - U.S. ambassador to Japan Walter Mondale said on Friday he was hopeful
the United States and Japan could thrash out a deal on microchip trade ahead
of a July 31 deadline.
[02] Deutsche Telekom cable TV sale
BRUSSELS - Commissioner Van Miert said on Friday that contrary to news
reports, the Commission is not forcing Deutsche Telekom to sell its cable T.V
business. German parliament gave the green light to a telecommunications bill
that paves the way for deregulation in 1998 amid rising pressure on Deutsche
Telekom to sell its cable T.V network.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it had started a routine
probe into the acquisition of the whole of Enichem SpA's fertiliser unit
Arnyca Srl by Hydro Agri BVA, which belongs to Norsk Hydro AS

VIENNA - Only one out of four Austrians supports the introduction of a single
European currency that is scheduled for 1999, a poll released on Friday
showed.

ISTANBUL - Turkey will sign an agreement with the European Coal and Steel
Community next week to abolish customs duties mutually on steel trade, trade
officials said on Friday.

BRUSSELS - Agreement on the annual farm price package and 1997 set-aside are
the immediate agricultural priorities of the Irish EU Presidency.

GENEVA - The European Union asked the World Trade Organisation on Friday to
set up a panel to decide whether special United States tariffs on EU food and
drink exports violated the rules of the watchdog body.

BRUSSELS - The European Union's multi-disciplinary committee of scientific
experts on bovine spongiform encephalopath discussed operational methods at
its first meeting on Friday, a Commission spokesman said.
[09] Greece-Turkey-Aegean exercises
BRUSSELS - Greece and Turkey agreed on Saturday to call off military exercises
in the Aegean Sea during the peak summer holiday period in an effort to defuse
tensions which earlier this year almost resulted in armed conflict.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to adopt controversial new
rules on Wednesday that will help it uncover and investigate secret price-
fixing and market-sharing cartels.

BRUSSELS - EU finance ministers meeting begins at 0800 GMT; agenda includes
public hearing on the Irish presidency programme at 0900 GMT and meeting with
eastern and central European counterparts at 1400 GMT.

addresses lunch meeting of the Royal Institute for International Relations on
"Why Hong Kong matters to Europe" at 1030 GMT, followed by news conference at
