    TOKYO - U.S. ambassador to Japan Walter Mondale said on Friday he was hopeful the United States and Japan could thrash out a deal on microchip trade ahead of a July 31 deadline.

    [02] Deutsche Telekom cable TV sale

    BRUSSELS - Commissioner Van Miert said on Friday that contrary to news reports, the Commission is not forcing Deutsche Telekom to sell its cable T.V business. German parliament gave the green light to a telecommunications bill that paves the way for deregulation in 1998 amid rising pressure on Deutsche Telekom to sell its cable T.V network.

    BRUSSELS - Greece and Turkey agreed on Saturday to call off military exercises in the Aegean Sea during the peak summer holiday period in an effort to defuse tensions which earlier this year almost resulted in armed conflict.
