    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is unlikely to sanction Italy if it fails to reduce the huge debt of giant state conglomerate IRI this year provided that the privatisation of IRI's Stet takes place early in 1997, EU sources said.

    [02] GE Capital buy of CompuNet

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Friday it was starting a routine probe into the acquisition of CompuNet Computer AG by General Electric Co's GE Capital Corp.

    [03] Spanish cable TV deal

    BRUSSELS - In a widely expected move, the European Commission said on Friday it had started a full probe of a Spanish cable television joint venture between Telefonica de Espana and Sogecable SA, which belongs to Canal Plus SA and Spain's Promotora de Informaciones SA.

    [04] Vulkan must repay excess state aid

    BREMEN - The European Commission said on Saturday that bankrupt German shipbuilder Bremer Vulkan AG received excessive state aid for the construction of an ocean liner and would have to repay it.

    [05] Commission on farm budget cuts

    BRUSSELS - Reports that finance ministers are considering cutting the 1997 budget for the Common Agricultural Policy would mean making additional savings to those already needed, a Commission spokesman said on Friday.

    [06] MEPs support cereals set-aside

    STRASBOURG - The European Parliament voted on Friday in favour of a European Commission proposal to halve the cereals set-aside rate to five percent in the marketing year starting on July 1, 1997.

    [07] Media concentration

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission aims to present proposals by the end of July for a directive to curb domination of the media by moguls such as Silvio Berlusconi and Rupert Murdoch.

    [08] ASEAN/EU future in security talks

    JAKARTA - The Association of Southeast Asian Nation is debating whether the European Union should continue to participate in its regional security talks, senior ASEAN diplomats said on Sunday.

    BRUSSELS - EU farm ministers meeting begins at 1300 GMT; main discussions focus on Commissioner Fischler's ideas on beef market reform.
