    BRUSSELS - Russian security chief Alexander Lebed said on Monday that Russia would not try to stand in the way of NATO's planned eastwards expansion.

    BRUSSELS - An inspection team to Ireland to check controls on beef stores which led to a fifty percent cut in penalties is still in place, Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler told the European Parliament on Monday.

    BRUSSELS - Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn will ask non-governmental organisations on Tuesday to lobby their governments to change the EU treaty to allow social programmes to be adopted by Qualified Majority Vote.

    BRUSSELS - The European Union's monetary committee will meet on Tuesday to hammer out the details on a budget stability pact for countries joining a single currency in 1999, monetary officials said on Monday.
