LONDON - British scientists said on Wednesday they had found fresh evidence
that people can get a new human form of mad cow disease from eating beef.
[02] Animal disease programme approved
BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had agreed to a plan
by Farm Commissioner Franz Fischler to spend 67 million Ecus in 1997
eradicating animal diseases which threaten human health.
[03] Farmers face refund cuts
BRUSSELS - European farmers could be hit by cuts in export refunds if
proposals to help beef producers using cuts in aid to cereal farmers do not go
through, an EU official said on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - Inter-governmental conference negotiators may have to reconsider
the way that the European Union budget is handled following this week's IGC
meeting, the group's chairman Noel Dorr has said.

STRASBOURG, France - The European Union's executive Commission is preparing a
report on measures to combat child sex tourism, the EU's commissioner for
tourism, Christos Papoutsis, said on Tuesday.

BRUSSELS - European Commission President Jacques Santer on Wednesday used
Denmark's decision to block European Union moves on U.S. anti-Cuba laws to
call for an end to the use of vetoes in EU decision making.

STRASBOURG - The Irish EU Presidency said on Wednesday it envisaged talks with
Denmark about its opposition to European Union efforts to fight Washington's

BRUSSELS - Denmark and Finland edged closer on Wednesday to an EU deal to
phase out limits on the amount of alcohol their nationals can take home from

BRUSSELS - European Union diplomats expressed cautious optimism on Wednesday
that agreement could be reached on liberalising natural gas markets following
this week's first discussions on a new proposal from the Irish presidency.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had aproved a French
research grant for a project carried out by steel makers Usinor Sacilor SA of

restructuring plan for German machinery giant SKET GmbH, Competition
Commissioner Karel Van Miert was quoted as telling a delegation of SKET's

THE HAGUE - Dutch Economic Affairs Minister Hans Wijers intends to raise
government support to the Dutch shipbuilding sector by 10 million guilders,
his ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday that it had turned down
200 million pesetas in aid, most of which has been paid to Opel Spain, a
