    LUXEMBOURG - European Union farm ministers agreed on Wednesday, despite Germany opposition, on measures to give an extra 500 million Ecus aid to farmers hurt by the mad cow crisis and to cut beef surpluses, EU officials said.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it had forwarded to the Council of Ministers its annual proposal for fixing guide prices for fishery products in 1997.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission may make an announcement on Thursday on Deutsche Telekom's price discounts for big customers, a Commission official said on Wednesday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission decided on Wednesday to fine five ferry companies a total of 645,000 Ecus for operating a price cartel on cross- channel freight shipments in 1992.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday it planned to approve for five years an amended deal on long-term development of competition in the roundwood trade in Finland.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Wednesday that it was starting a preliminary inquiry into the acquisition of Safic-Alcan SA by German commodities trading firm Metallgesellschaft Handel & Beteiligungen A.

    BRUSSELS - The European Union's single market has helped create between 300,000 and 900,000 jobs, increased the EU's income and lowered inflation, the European Commission said on Wednesday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission agreed on Wednesday to send a warning letter to Greece, urging it to remove restrictions on television advertisements for toys, which non-national manufacturers say discriminate against them.

    ZURICH - Neutral Switzerland edged away from its traditonal isolationism on Wednesday by announcing it would join NATO's Partnership for Peace programme in a bid to promote security in post-Cold War Europe.

    DUBLIN - The Israeli government hinted on Wednesday that it might not receive an EU delegation if it insisted on a visit to Palestinian leaders at their Orient House offices in Jerusalem.
