    BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers gave a cautious welcome on Tuesday to Britain's decision to slaughter 100,000 extra cattle, but warned it could be a long haul before a worldwide ban on British beef exports was lifted.

    BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers agreed on Tuesday to improve the diet of young cows and to ban by 2006 the use of cramped crates for rearing calves over two months old, EU officials said.

    WASHINGTON - The United States and the European Union should put the finishing touches next month on a series of agreements that would knock down barriers on $40 billion worth of trade, President Clinton said on Monday.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had decided to grant a five-year exemption to the Finnish roundwood trade arrangements.
