    BRUSSELS - A new case of mad cow disease, the first which could involve an animal born of British stock in Germany, should not make it more difficult to ease a worldwide ban on British beef, EU and industry officials said on Thursday.

    BRUSSELS - Richard Branson's Virgin Express regional airline on Thursday urged European governments to ensure that airlines can compete on equal terms in a deregulated market.

    BRUSSELS - Italian airline Alitalia will have to wait until March or early April for a European Commission ruling on the fate of its planned cash injection, a senior Commission official said on Thursday.

    RIGA - Latvian Prime Minister Andris Shkele on Thursday signed three agreements with European Union Immigration, Justice and Interior Affairs Commissioner Anita Gradin for aid to improve the Baltic state's border controls.

    STRASBOURG - Four Dutch nationals asked the European Court of Human Rights on Thursday to rule that the Dutch justice system's use of anonymous witnesses violated their rights.

    LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice confirmed on Thursday Community rules permit all basic patent holders of medicinal products to receive supplementary protection certificates extending the length of the patent.

    LUXEMBOURG - The European Court of Justice found on Thursday that a Turkish worker legally employed in a member state for four years is entitled to take a new offer of employment in the same member state.

    BRUSSELS - The head of the European Parliament's budget committee has ambitious plans to reform the European Union's spending habits between now and the next EP elections in June 1999.

    BONN - Germany's ruling coalition parties on Thursday gave their blessing to a big tax-cutting reform plan aimed at boosting the country's competitiveness and putting its four million unemployed back to work.

    AMSTERDAM - The Dutch consensus economy could offer important pointers on the way forward in European social policy, its employment minister said on Thursday.
