    SINGAPORE - The European Union and the Association of South East Asian Nations agreed on Friday to take a series of steps to boost trade and economic cooperation.

    [02] ASEAN/EU can't agree on Burma

    SINGAPORE - European and Southeast Asian nations had productive talks on Burma, East Timor and human rights issues on Thursday, but could not agree on how to deal with Rangoon's military government, a top official said.

    GENEVA - Trade diplomats cautioned on Thursday that conclusion of a global pact to open up basic telecommunications was far from certain only two days before the agreed February 15 deadline for an accord.

    BRUSSELS - The European Union's textile industry lodged an appeal on Thursday against a European Court ruling backing a European Commission decision to allow British state aid to Taiwan's Hualon Corporation, the European Apparel & Textile Organisation said.

    BRUSSELS - Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze told NATO this week that the West did not offer Moscow any guarantees about the alliance's future during talks over German unification in 1990, NATO sources said on Thursday.

    WASHINGTON - New U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has played down Moscow's increasingly harsh anti-NATO rhetoric and said she does not think most Russian people and the "responsible" leaders feel that way.

    BONN - As pressure continued to mount on German Chancellor Helmut Kohl to say whether he will stand in next year's general election, top party sources said on Thursday a decision was not likely soon.

    SINGAPORE - First Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) foreign ministers meeting begins at 0100 GMT (Saturday); exchange of information on regional cooperation in Asia and Europe followed by a news conference.
