    BRUSSELS - European Union farm ministers attacked on Tuesday a proposal to cut direct aid payments to cereals farmers by 1.4 billion ecus to fund extra aid for beef farmers hit by the mad cow crisis.

    [02] Poland wants more EU aid

    BRUSSELS - Polish Deputy Prime Minister Roman Jaglelinski said on Wednesday he wanted more European Union aid to help match EU veterinary and plant health standards.

    BRUSSELS - Farm ministers approved on Tuesday the opening of a 30,000-tonne tariff quota for imports of U.S. malting barley on condition that Washington withdraw its complaint to the World Trade Organisation, an EU official said.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to clear on Wednesday new German subsidies amounting to 728 million marks to help two shipyards in former east Germany which were previously owned by bankrupt Bremer Vulkan, EU sources said on Tuesday.
