    ROME - European Union dignitaries toasted 40 years of integration and peace among members on Tuesday and pledged not to allow the opportunities presented by the fall of communism to slip by them.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission cleared on Tuesday a Belgian scheme to cut social security charges on manual workers' wages after banning a previous scheme which gave tax breaks to export-led companies only.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to ask the German authorities shortly to provide information about a loan plan for Bavarian media mogul Leo Kirch.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission said on Tuesday it had cleared a proposal for a joint venture through which Birmingham International Airport will be controlled by Natwest Ventures Ltd, AER Rianta International and seven district councils of the British west midlands.

    TIRANA - France flew 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Albania on Tuesday as Europe prepared to launch a major relief effort for the stricken country backed by troops to help it get through if necessary.
