    LUXEMBOURG - Fisheries ministers agreed on Monday by a qualified majority vote on autonomous import tariff quotas for 1997, EU officials said.

    LUXEMBOURG - Fisheries ministers gave political agreement on Monday to EU aid of 100 million ecus between 1997-9 to encourage Italian fishermen to stop using driftnets for catching swordfish, EU officials said.

    LUXEMBOURG - European Union fisheries ministers on Monday sought to tone down plans to slash fish catches by up to 30 percent while Britain said it would not implement further cuts until so-called "quota hoppers" had been dealt with.

    BRUSSELS - The European Commission is expected to propose rules on Wednesday that could force British commodities trading houses to increase capital to cover market risks, industry and Commission officials said.

    ATHENS - The drachma will enter the exchange rate mechanism of the European Monetary System in the spring of 1999 at an off-market rate, Greek bankers predicted in an informal Reuters poll.
