[04] The European Commission publishes its second report on "key data on education in the European Union"

There are more than 117 million young people under 25 years of age in the European Union, equivalent to 32% of its total population. Of these, 72 million are school-children and students, 63% of whom are in compulsory education. They are accommodated in 307 000 schools with over 4 million teachers, more than 50% of whom are over 40 years old. Pupil-teacher ratios in primary education have seen a considerable improvement over the past 30 years. Belgium, France and Italy are the bastions of nursery education for 3-year-olds, with more than 90% of such children attending school. The number of students in higher education throughout the Union has almost doubled in 15 years. A quarter of all graduates are in the social sciences. This is the multifaceted Europe which the second edition of "Key data on education in the European Union" invites the reader to discover, indicating the trends and points of convergence which are seen across the Union. Key data on education in the European Union, European Commission, 1995, is on sale at the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities in Luxembourg and its national sales points (price ECU 25).

[05] Brittan trip to Japan with European business leaders

Sir Leon Brittan, Vice-President of the European Commission, will travel to Japan tomorrow with a group of senior European businessmen. Part of the visit is designed to explore opportunities for cooperation and improved market access in semi-conductors, telecommunications services, medical equipment, household/ electrical appliances and processed food. All are sectors of major importance to European companies.

[06] Brittan meets Chinese Premier and signs four EU-China cooperation programmes

Sir Leon Brittan is signing four EU-China cooperation programmes today during a four-day visit to China. The programmes cover intellectual property protection; cooperation between universities; dairy production; and the development of water buffalo for agricultural purposes. Shortly before the signing ceremony, Sir Leon is meeting the Chinese Premier, Li Peng.

[07] Humanitarian aid: news in brief

The European Commission has approved humanitarian aid projects to be carried out in Mozambique, for victims of flooding, Zaire, to combat cholera, Guatemala, for returnees, in Nigeria and Chad, to combat meningitis epidemics. Worth a total of more than ECU 3 million, the projects are being channelled via the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO).
