  • [01] Projects financed from the Community fund for research and information on tobacco

Padraig Flynn, European Commissioner with responsibility for Employment, Social Affairs and Public Health matters, has announced the approval of a list of eleven public information projects on the health dangers of smoking, funded through the Community Fund for Research and Information on Tobacco. This fund is raised by means of a levy on the premium paid for the production of tobacco leaf in the Community. The projects will be financed to the amount of ECU 5.5 million.

[02] 1996 Europe Against Cancer Week

The 1996 Europe Against Cancer Week will focus on the prevention of skin cancer. The 1996 campaign will explain the risk of excessive exposure to the sun and inform people of the importance of protecting children. Padraig Flynn, European Commissioner with responsibility of Public Health matters, stressed that "although the sun is a source of pleasure and essential for health, it is among the risk factors in skin cancer, which affects 10,000 European citizens each year".

[03] Commission clears GEC-Thomson joint venture in non-military sonars

The European Commission has cleared the formation of a joint venture between GEC and Thomson - CSF for the production of non-military sonars. A very small part of the joint venture's turnover is generated by non-military products. This concerns sonar devices for ocean science, environmental and offshore activities, marine navigation systems, fisheries and landbased systems. The two parties have low market shares for these products. The Commission has decided that the operation does not create or strengthen a dominant position on any market.

[04] Commission approves joint venture in the field of flexible packaging

The Commission has approved the proposed acquisition of a 32% stake and of important veto rights by Frantschach AG, Wien and Bischof + Klein GmbH + Co, Lengerich/D B+K) in the Italian family-owned group of Volfin SpA, San Pietro in Gł.

[05] Padraig Flynn argues that Europe cannot afford the costs of a non-social Europe

Speaking today in London to the America-Europe Community Association, Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner Padraig Flynn argues that while there is no doubt that the European social model needs to be reshaped in the face of pressures such as limited revenue, rising costs, high unemployment etc., the need for social policy remains undiminished. The European social model has ensured social cohesion and solidarity across the generations, across the Union. The costs and benefits of the European social model should be calculated on the basis of the economy as a whole, not simply by looking at direct public expenditure.
