[02] Commission authorises acquisition of Hoesch Spundwand und Profil GmbH by Salzgitter AG

The European Commission has authorised the acquisition of Hoesch Spundwand und Profil GmbH, a subsidiary of Thyssen Krupp Group, by Salzgittter AG, as it will not create a dominant position in the steel markets concerned.

[03] Commission clears joint venture between Woco group and Michelin for the manufacture of anti-vibration systems for automobiles

The European Commission has authorised under the EU's merger control rules the formation of a joint venture called Woco Michelin ABS B.V. between the German company Woco and the French company Michelin. The joint venture will combine the parents' activities in the manufacture of anti-vibration systems for automobiles. The joint venture will produce anti-vibration systems for use in automobile suspension systems, decouplings, mass dampers, engine mountings, and exhaust hangers. The market share of the joint venture at the EU level is not such as to cause competition concerns, particularly in view of the existence of strong competitors and the buying power of automobile manufacturers. In view of the above the Commission has decided to clear the operation.

[04] Adoption of testing scheme to monitor and survey BSE

The European Commission today formally adopted a decision to reinforce the epidemic surveillance of BSE in cattle by introducing a monitoring programme from 1st January 2001, through rapid post mortem tests. Three post-mortem tests have been validated by the Commission last year to this end. Annual monitoring programmes will be carried out on a targeted sample of animals, with a particular focus on animals which die on farms, sick animals slaughtered as emergencies and animals displaying behavioural or neurological signs. Around 65000 tests will be carried out amongst the cattle population most at risk. The test results should provide more accurate picture of the incidence of BSE in the EU and of the patterns of infectivity in the animal population. The testing programme will be evaluated after six months to see if any further adjustments are needed. David Byrne, Commissioner responsible for Health and Consumer Protection welcomed the formal adoption of this decision. He added that, as a next step in the protection against BSE, he would like to see Member States move ahead with the adoption of a decision to remove specific risk material (SRM).
