[01] Pharmaceuticals: high level group established to look at medicines for
Europe
Work on a new agenda to improve the framework for competitiveness in the
pharmaceutical industry and to harness its power to deliver on Europe's
health care goals was launched in Brussels today. Commissioners Erkki
Liikanen and David Byrne met health and industry ministers, pharmaceutical
leaders and patient representatives to establish common ground and agree
objectives. These stakeholders will meet three times over the coming year
to take stock of progress and suggest solutions to problems as and when
they arise. The stakeholders' group will report to Commission President
Romano Prodi in April 2002.
[02] La Commission adopte son rapport sur la mise en œuvre du code des
aides à la sidérurgie en 2000
La Commission européenne a adopté son rapport annuel pour l'an 2000 sur la
mise en œuvre du code des aides à la sidérurgie. La Commission a pris des
décisions dans 17affaires, dont cinq ont fait l'objet d'une autorisation
sans que la procédure formelle d'examen ait été ouverte, huit ont abouti à
une décision finale et les quatre restantes, d'une décision d'ouvrir la
procédure. Les affaires qui se sont révélées les plus problématiques sont
celles portant sur des aides à l'investissement destinées à la protection
de l'environnement. Dans trois de ces affaires, la Commission a pris une
décision initiale d'ouvrir la procédure, et dans une affaire concernant
cinq entreprises, elle a pris une décision négative. Elle a également pris
deux décisions partiellement négatives dans deux autres affaires de cette
nature.

Commissioner David Byrne, responsible for Health and Consumer Protection is
on official visit to the US from Tuesday, 27 March to Wednesday, 28 March.
The objective is to meet representatives of the new Bush administration and
to update them on current developments in the EU particularly on food
