[01] Commission clears venture between Tele Danmark Mobile International
and CMG Wireless Data Solutions
The European Commission has cleared a proposed joint venture called MIGway
between Denmark's TDC Mobile International A/S and Anglo-Dutch firm CMG
Wireless Data Solutions BV. The joint venture will provide wireless
application infrastructure services for content and service providers on
the Internet.
[02] Commission clears purchase of US medical device maker C.R. Bard by
Tyco International
The European Commission has approved a transaction whereby Bermuda-based
company Tyco International Inc. acquires full ownership of US medical
device maker C.R. Bard Inc. The Commission assessed the competitive impact
of the operation in Europe and concluded that it would not give rise to any
competition concerns.
[03] David Byrne se félicite des améliorations importantes apportées aux
règles concernant la protection de la santé et de la sécurité des
consommateurs
David Byrne, commissaire européen chargé de la santé et de la protection
des consommateurs, s'est félicité de l'adoption hier par le Parlement
européen de la directive révisée relative à la sécurité générale des
produits. Celle-ci apportera des améliorations significatives aux règles
relatives à la protection de la santé et de la sécurité des consommateurs
en ce qui concerne les produits non alimentaires. Elle actualisera,
renforcera et complétera les règles actuelles, qui sont en vigueur depuis
1992. Le texte résultant de la conciliation avec le Conseil des ministres
respecte les grands principes de la proposition initiale de la Commission
de mars 2000 et établit un juste équilibre en résolvant les questions non
réglées.
[04] Commission allocates euro 5 million in emergency aid for the
Palestinian Territories
The European Commission is providing a further euro 5 million in
humanitarian assistance for the victims of the ongoing crisis in the West
Bank and Gaza. More than 500 Palestinians have been killed and 14,000
injured since the fighting erupted in September 2000. In addition, the
economic and social situation has grown progressively worse leading to a
rapid deterioration in daily living conditions for much of the population.
The aid will be channelled through the Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) which
comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson.
[05] Commission allocates euro 2 million in humanitarian aid for East Timor
The European Commission has approved a further euro 2 million for
humanitarian assistance to the people of East Timor in the run-up to the
territory's independence. The aid will be channelled through the
Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) which comes under the responsibility of
Commissioner Poul Nielson. Support will be focused on four sectors :
shelter, health, psychosocial assistance and repatriation/resettlement.
