[02] Commission clears hydro power production joint venture between E.ON and Verbund

The European Commission has cleared the creation of European Hydro Power (EHP), an electricity production joint venture between E.ON, Germany's second largest energy company, and the main Austrian electricity producer Verbund. The venture will not be active directly on the market but will produce electricity for its parents, which will continue to sell the power separately to third parties.

[03] EU welcomes WTO definitive confirmation that US export subsidies (Foreign Sales Corporations) are illegal, and calls on US to comply with WTO findings

The EU yesterday welcomed the World Trade Organisation's confirmation that the Foreign Sales Corporation Replacement Act, brought in by the US in response to condemnation of its original FSC export subsidy system, is also incompatible with WTO rules. Reacting to the news from Geneva, European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy said : "We now have a definitive legal ruling on the FSC case. Of course I'm pleased that the WTO has confirmed what we always believed. We have made a point of handling this dispute in a very reasonable manner. Now it is up to the US to comply with the WTO's findings to settle this matter once and for all. As to how, we look forward to rapid US proposals."

[05] Commission Employment report : "Employment may suffer in 2002 but employment policy must continue"

The European Commission today published Employment in Europe 2001 - Autumn Update. Based upon the Commission's Autumn Forecasts (November 2001), the report describes the employment implications of the recent economic slowdown and the September 11 terrorist attack. It provides a detailed analysis of sectoral employment trends in the European Union. It discusses the Union's resilience to macroeconomic shocks, its capacity to adapt to change, and the role of confidence for employment performance.
