  • [01] Commission approves TeliaSonera's proposed buyers for Com hem and Telia Mobile Finland

The European Commission has approved TeliaSonera's proposal to sell its Swedish cable TV business Com hem AB to EQT Partners AB and Telia Mobile Finland to Suomen 2G/DNA. The sale of the two businesses is the result of the conditions attached to last year's merger between the telecommunications operators of Sweden and Finland. The divestitures will ensure that consumers in Finland will continue to enjoy the benefits of competition in the market for third-generation (3G) mobile services and that Swedish consumers will benefit from increased competition in the market for fixed line telephony and Internet services.

[02] Commission clears Internet hotel bookings JV between Accor, Hilton and Six Continents through WorldRes Europe

The European Commission has granted regulatory approval regarding a proposed joint venture between French hotel chain Accor, the British hotel chains Hilton and Six Continents and the American e-commerce company in the global lodging industry WorldRes.Com. The agreement will give joint control to all concerned of WorldRes.Europe, which will operate an Internet-based reservation system and travel agency websites. The deal does not give rise to any significant competition concerns.

[04] Statement of the Commission following the referendum on EU accession in Slovakia

The European Commission congratulates Slovakia for the overwhelming support for EU accession as shown by the outcome of the referendum. It is the first referendum in Slovakia since its independence which is valid, since the required 50% threshold has been passed. This demonstrates the strong will of the Slovak people to join the European family of democratic nations as a member of the European Union, with equal rights and obligations. The Commission is confident that Slovakia will play an important role in the development of the European integration process and looks forward to it. Once in the EU, Slovakia will take advantage of all the opportunities of membership in order to consolidate political stability, justice, the rule of law and to boost economic development.

[05] Informal regional policy council in Chalkidiki, Greece : Ministers from the 25 call for a strengthening of European cohesion policies in the light of enlargement

Michel Barnier, the European Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy, met the Ministers of the Member States and accession countries responsible for regional policy last Friday, 16 April, in Chalkidiki, Greece. Hosted by the Minister for Economy and Finance, Mr Nicos Christodoulakis, the meeting addressed the question of the future of cohesion policy after 2006 as well as issues relating to the implementation of the current generation of European regional development programmes. The presidency presented conclusions of this meeting.

[06] EU and South Korea discuss scientific cooperation

On 16 May, in Brussels, European Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin met the South Korean Minister for science and technology, Mr Ho Koon Park. They discussed the ways and means to enhance scientific and technological cooperation between the EU and South Korea. They addressed the possibility of negotiating a EU-South Korea scientific cooperation agreement, and the potential participation of South Korea in the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) fusion energy project.
