  • [01] Commission moves smartly as European Mobility Week starts

European Mobility Week kicks off on 16 September and closes on 'Car Free Day', 22 September. The objective of this week-long event is to promote sustainable modes of transport and this year over 500 cities across the European Union are participating. As part of its support for Mobility Week, the European Commission is launching its "Smart Moves" campaign, with the theme of accessibility centre stage. The campaign will be launched by Vice President Neil Kinnock and Environment Commissioner Margot Wallström on Tuesday 16 September at 9.30 am in the Commission's Charlemagne building. Ms Wallström will arrive at Charlemagne from her office in the Commission's Beaulieu building by vélo-taxi.

[02] Commission clears ABN buy of Italy's Sole SpA and Zanussi Elettromeccanica

The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation to the acquisition of Applied Components Companies S.p.A. (ACC), an Italian financial holding company which controls Sole S.p.A and Zanussi Elettromeccanica, by the Dutch financial services group ABN Amro Group. ACC is presently controlled by the Allianz Group. Sole and Zanussi make electrical and compressor engines for "white goods" products such as refrigerators. (The operation, notified on 11 August 2003, was examined under the simplified merger review procedure)

[03] Commission clears acrylate products JV between Sasol and Mitsubishi

The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation to the creation of two joint ventures between Sasol Chemical Industries Limited of South Africa and Japan's Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. The two ventures will produce and market acrylate products. (The operation, notified on 12 August 2003, was examined under a simplified procedure)

[05] Commission approves deployment of European Union Mission to observe Guatemala elections on 9 November 2003 : EU funding €1.7 million

The European Commission has approved the deployment of an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) to the presidential, parliamentary and local elections in Guatemala scheduled for 9 November 2003, with a possible Presidential run off on 28 December. The 2003 elections represent a challenge for Guatemalan society, as the necessary strengthening of democratic institutions will depend to a large extent on whether the election process is held in accordance with international standards. Jannis Sakellariou, Member of the European Parliament (MEP), will lead the EU EOM. The Commission has allocated €1.7 million to the funding of the EOM.

[06] EU welcomes WTO accession of Cambodia and Nepal

On 11 September, the WTO Ministerial Conference, meeting in Cancun, approved the accessions of Cambodia and Nepal the first accessions of Least Developed Countries since the creation of the WTO in 1995. European Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy paid tribute to the two governments for the enormous efforts each had made to meet its accession challenge : "It is apt that the first two LDC accessions since the creation of the WTO should come about at this crucial juncture of a development focussed trade round. The decision on the guidelines adopted last year to facilitate and speed up accession of LDCs is now, quite rightly, bearing its first fruit here in Cancun." Following the Brussels Least Developed Countries' Conference in May 2001, the EU was very much at the origin of specific guidelines for LDCs (to facilitate and accelerate the accession process) when it made concrete proposals in 1999.
