  • [01] Pascal Lamy in Poland to discuss trade implications of enlargement

EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamy travels to Warsaw on 1-2 March to discuss with the government, business and civil society, the trade implications of the upcoming accession of Poland to the EU. On the eve of his visit Pascal Lamy said: 'With less than 3 months to go before accession we want to make sure that we are ready for this historical event. Poland is already a member of the trade family and I will seize this opportunity to discuss with the government, business and civil society how we can promote our common interests together in all aspects of our trade policy."

[02] European Union Election Observation Mission to Indonesia for upcoming election

The European Commission will deploy shortly an EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the Parliamentary (5 April) and Presidential Elections (5 July with possible second round) in Indonesia. The European Commission is funding the mission with €5 million from the European Commission's European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). The 2004 elections are the second democratic elections after the transition to multi-party democracy and the first direct Presidential elections and represent thus an important test. The mission will be led by Mr Glyn Ford, Member of the European Parliament, Member of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs, Human Rights, Common Security and Defence Policy.

[03] February 2004: Economic sentiment remained unchanged

Following its nearly continuous increase since summer last year, interrupted only in December, the economic sentiment indicator (ESI) stabilised in February at a level of 96.7 for the EU and at 96.0 for the euro area. In the EU, a small decrease in confidence in the construction sector was compensated by an equally small improvement of confidence among consumers and retailers. The euro area saw a small improvement in consumer confidence balanced by a fall in confidence in both the construction and retail sector. Industrial confidence remained at the same level as in January for both the euro area and the EU as a whole. The services confidence indicator, which is not a component of the ESI, remained unchanged in the EU and improved slightly in the euro area.

[04] February 2004: The euro area business climate indicator decreased slightly

The Business Climate Indicator (BCI) for the euro area decreased slightly between January and February, reaching a value of 0.01. This decrease was driven by a weakening in most components of the indicator, i.e. production trend in the recent past, total and export order books as well as stocks of finished products. The increase recorded in production expectations was not sufficient to make up for the deterioration in the other components.

[05] Report on the future of rural areas in the CEE New Member States

Rural development measures have become more important in recent years and will gain further importance in future as shown in the conclusions of Second European Conference on Rural Development, held in Salzburg, in November 2003. The report "The Future of Rural Areas in the CEE New Member States" is an important reference document analysing the current situation and future prospects of rural areas in the eight Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) acceding the European Union on May 1, 2004 as well as in Romania and Bulgaria. The report is mainly based on background information provided by the country experts of the "Network of Independent Agricultural Experts in the CEE Candidate Countries" and on available regional statistics. The analysis covers a number of important topics for rural regions: farm and food chain related analyses, rural labour market trends, rural infrastructure, rural and agricultural policies and concludes with a very detailed typology of rural areas. The report is available on the internet at: http://europa.eu.int/comm/agriculture/publi/reports/ccrurdev/index_en.htm

[09] Statement by Commissioner Chris Patten following the death of the President of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Boris Trajkovski

On learning of the tragic death of Boris Trajkovski, President of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Chris Patten, Commissioner for External Relations said, "I am extremely distressed to hear about the death of President Trajkovski. I worked with him closely during the crisis that led up to the Lake Ohrid Agreement and in the implementation of that Agreement. He was a great servant of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, and a great friend of the European Union. Through his dedicated work and commitment he drew his country ever closer to the European family. We will all miss him profoundly, and send our condolences to his family, his friends, and to the people of his country."
