  • [01] Kosovo: Commission opens Liaison Office in Pristina

The European Commission has opened a new Liaison Office in Kosovo and appointed Mr Giorgio Mamberto as Head of the Office. He will be taking up his new role in Pristina on 1 September 2004. With the opening of this office, the Commission intends to maintain a closer contact with the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) and the Provisional Institutions of Self- Government on the ground. The aim of this direct presence of the Commission in Pristina is to foster Kosovo’s approximation to the EU through the Stabilisation and Association Process (SAp) in particular the SAp Tracking Mechanism (STM), the European Partnership, the Community Assistance for Reconstruction, Development and Stabilisation Programme (CARDS) and other instruments and initiatives under the Thessaloniki agenda for the Western Balkans.

[02]  Georgia: Commission allocates €4 million to victims of Abkhazia/Georgia conflict

The European Commission has approved a €4 million humanitarian aid package to support vulnerable people in Georgia, affected by the unresolved conflict between Abkhazia and Georgia. The recipients will include internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Georgia as well as vulnerable groups in Abkhazia and Western Georgia and children in Tbilisi. Funds are being allocated via the Humanitarian Aid Office, ECHO. Assistance to vulnerable groups will be provided in the following sectors: food, medical support and shelter. Programmes will be implemented by international agencies operating in the region.

[03] Commission, ACEA and ERTICO sign Memorandum of Understanding on introduction of eCall for road crash victims across Europe

Today, Mr. Fabio Colasanti, Director-General at the European Commission’s Information-Society Directorate-General, signed together with the representatives of two other major stakeholders, ACEA and ERTICO, a Memorandum of Understanding that aims at realising an interoperable, pan- European in-vehicle emergency call, eCall. The MoU, which is soon expected to be signed by other industrial and public sector stakeholders, provides for a solid basis for the partners to actively contribute to the development and implementation of the eCall in potentially all new vehicles sold in Europe.
