[01] Message of Commission President Romano Prodi to Ahmad Qurai, Prime
Minister of the Palestinian Authority, and Rawhi Fatouh, Speaker of the
Palestinian Legislative Council, on the death of President Yasser Arafat
"On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, I wish to
express my most sincere condolences on the demise of President Yasser
Arafat. The Palestinians have lost a leader who symbolised their
aspirations of a Palestinian state. I wish to offer my deepest sympathy to
the family of President Arafat and to the Palestinian people. The
Commission wishes to express its continued commitment to a resolution of
the Middle East conflict. The Commission is working with the Palestinian
Authority towards this goal and towards ensuring a peaceful and democratic
transition in the days and weeks to come."
[02] Commission clears video-on-demand joint venture between Walt Disney
and Columbia Pictures in the United Kingdom and Ireland
The European Commission has cleared, under the Merger Regulation, a joint
venture, called MovieCo, which will offer a video-on-demand service in the
United Kingdom and Ireland. The joint venture, created by US film studios
Columbia Pictures and The Walt Disney Company together with UK company ON
Demand Group, will create competition to the current dominant provider of
Pay-tv content to the benefit of cable customers in the two countries.
[03] Commission clears joint control of Spanish company Itevelesa by APAX
and BCH
The European Commission has granted clearance, under the Merger Regulation,
to a proposed concentration by which the undertaking Quijote Investments
SÁRL (Luxembourg), which belongs to the Apax group of companies, and Vista
Desarrollo S.A., S.C.R., a subsidiary of Banco Santander Central Hispano
S.A, acquire joint control of Corporativa de Servicios Grupo Itevelesa,
S.L. Itevelesa provides services related to roadworthiness tests for motor
vehicles, control and verification of metrological equipments and
industrial security control. (The operation, notified on 11 October 2004,
was examined under a simplfied procedure).
[04] Commission allocates additional €5.3 million for victims of
Caribbean storms
The European Commission has allocated an additional €5.3 million in
emergency aid to meet needs caused by Hurricane Ivan and tropical storm
Jeanne on the Caribbean islands of Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba and the Dominican
Republic. This brings the EC's total response in favour of the victims of
this years' storms in the Caribbean to €9.8 million. Funds are allocated
through the EC's Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO).
[05] EU-Russia Industrialists' Round Table continues efforts to promote EU-
Russia economic ties
On 10 November, at its 6th General Conference in The Hague, the EU-Russia
Industrialists' Round Table (IRT) - which annually develops recommendations
to Russia and the European Commission on trade and regulatory barriers -
adopted a set of joint conclusions and recommendations to governments on
the implementation of the plan to create a Common Economic Space with
Russia. The Round Table also adopted specific conclusions in the areas of
Energy, Information and Communication Technologies, Transports and
Forestry. The Commission expressed its support to the process, commending
the IRT for the serious work carried out, and its efforts to promote closer
economic relations with Russia and eliminate barriers to trade and
investment.
