[02] Preparatory work underway for a European Research Council

The first meeting will take place today of the Identification Committee convened by the European Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potočnik to recommend the composition of the governing body of a future European Research Council. The Commissioner is keen to ensure that the European Research Council will remain scientifically independent, which is why he has asked Lord Patten, former European Commissioner for External Relations and current Chancellor of Oxford University, to chair a group of experienced and respected scientists to identify possible members of the governing body.

[04] EU tables revised requests in services negotiations under the Doha Development Agenda of the WTO

The EU today submitted requests for improved market access for services to 103 WTO Members. The presentation of revised requests by the EU gives an important boost to the DDA by providing focused and targeted information to assist the EU's WTO partners in the preparation of their revised offers for May. Those requests will be discussed bilaterally in Geneva during February.

[05] Commission clears acquisition of WMC by Xstrata

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of WMC Resource Limited of Australia by Swiss undertaking Xstrata plc. Xstrata is an international natural resources group based in Zurich exporting thermal coal. It also produces coal, copper, zinc, gold, silver and alloys. WMC is a major diversified Australian minerals explorer and producer. Its main business is the discovery, development, production, processing and marketing of minerals, metals and chemicals. WMC primarily produces nickel, copper, uranium oxide, gold, silver and phosphate fertilisers. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[06] Commission approves acquisition of Grey by WPP

The European Commission has approved under the EU Merger Regulation WPP's proposed acquisition of Grey. Both companies, provide marketing communications and media buying services. After detailed analysis, the Commission has concluded that the merger would not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area (EEA) or any substantial part of it.

[07] Commission consults stakeholders on the future of EU development policy

The European Commission is seeking views from a wide range of stakeholders on the most important issues that should inform the revision of the current European Community development policy. A new policy proposal will be made in the first half of 2005, aimed at providing a vision for long term reflection and positioning of the Union in the international development debate, as well as a framework to guide the implementation of EU development assistance. The Commission is therefore launching an internet consultation in order to reach the widest possible range of development partners. The consultation will run until 2 March 2005 with results to be published by April 2005.

[08] Sri Lanka donor co-chairs meeting

The Co-chairs of the Tokyo Conference on Reconstruction and Development of Sri Lanka will meet today in Brussels to express their support to Sri Lanka in the wake of the Tsunami disaster which struck the North, East and South coasts of the country, and to evaluate how best to assist Sri Lanka in moving the peace process forward. The meeting will be co-chaired by European Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and the Luxemburg presidency, Mr Nicolas Schmitt, Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Immigration and will be attended by dignitaries from the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Norway. The Co-chairs will discuss the coordination of the Tsunami assistance and look for ways to ensure that the implementation of the tsunami assistance is sensitive to and strengthens the peace process. Likewise this assistance must adhere to the basic principles of disaster relief and reconstruction such as fair distribution, transparency, accountability and inclusiveness with the participation of local and international civil society and all political parties.
