[01] Customs : Commission and Member States step up action against
counterfeiting and piracy
Statistics just published by the European Commission show a significant
increase in the amount of counterfeit and pirated articles seized at the
EU's external borders in 2003. Customs officials seized almost 100 million
of such articles in 2003 compared with 85 million in 2002, of an estimated
value of one billion euros. Of particular concern in terms of consumer
health and safety is the increase in the number of seizures of games and
children's toys, with 12 million seizures representing a 996% increase over
2002. Seizures of food products and medicines increased in the same period
by 77%. The trend in recent years of a move from smuggling luxury goods to
smuggling more everyday products continued in 2003. While the compilation
of statistics for 2004 has not yet been completed, the results so far
demonstrate that the customs authorities of the new Member States have
intercepted a significant amount of counterfeit goods.

A la suite de sa décision sur l'aéroport de Charleroi, la Commission
européenne propose des règles claires pour les investissements dans les
aéroports, tant au niveau des infrastructures que des aides au démarrage.
Ces règles autorisent les aides au démarrage en faveur de nouvelles
lignes ouvertes dans des aéroports secondaires, parfois sous-utilisés,
mais dans des conditions strictes de transparence et de limitation dans le
temps. Ces possibilités doivent également éviter toute discrimination au
bénéfice exclusif d'une compagnie. Les lignes directrices proposées
visent également à clarifier les modes de financement des infrastructures
aéroportuaires.
[03] US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to visit Commission on 9
February
The new US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit the European
Commission, as part of her visit to Europe, on 9 February, in preparation
of President Bush's visit to the European Union on 22 February. President
Barroso and Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood
Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, will receive Secretary Rice, before
inviting her to join the External Relations Group of Commissioners in a
discussion on how the EU and the US can promote democracy and opportunity
around the globe. Commissioners attending this meeting also include
Commissioner for Trade, Peter Mandelson, Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli
Rehn, Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs, JoaquÃn Almunia, and
Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel. Media are
invited to a press conference in the Commission press room (Berlaymont
building) on 9 February at 16h45. Journalists are requested to arrive at

[04] Journée de l'internet plus sûr
Aujourd'hui, la journée de l'internet plus sûr sera célébrée par 65
organisations dans 30 pays à travers le monde, de l'Australie à l'Islande
et de la Russie à Singapour. Parrainée par Mme Viviane Reding, membre de
la Commission européenne chargée de la société de l’information et
des médias, la journée 2005 de l'internet plus sûr est marquée par le
lancement, dans 19 pays et 16 langues, d'un concours de contes pour enfants
ayant l'internet pour thème (les résultats seront proclamés en juin
2005). Cette journée s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une campagne mondiale de
sensibilisation visant à promouvoir une utilisation plus sûre d'internet,
en particulier auprès des jeunes. Elle est organisée par le réseau
européen INSAFE, lequel est coordonné par le Réseau scolaire européen
et cofinancé par la Commission. D'autres activités sont attendues comme
des conférences, le lancement de programmes scolaires de formation Ã
l'utilisation d'internet, des communiqués de presse à la radio et la
télévision et le lancement de plusieurs sites web consacrés à ce sujet.
