[01] Marché intérieur - SOLVIT de plus en plus efficace
Le réseau SOLVIT créé par la Commission européenne et les Etats
membres de l'UE pour aider les citoyens et les entreprises à régler les
problèmes découlant de la mauvaise application de la législation
communautaire a traité 289 cas en 2004, soit 72% de plus qu'en 2003.
D'après un rapport de la Commission, quatre cas sur cinq ont trouvé une
solution. Le défi qui se pose maintenant est de mieux faire connaître
SOLVIT en tant qu'alternative rapide et gratuite aux tribunaux.
[02] Commission sends proposals on GMOs to Council
The European Commission today adopted proposals to be sent to the Council
of Ministers asking five Member states to lift their bans on certain
authorised genetically modified organisms. The draft decisions concern the
GM maize varieties T25 and MON810 banned in Austria, GM maize Bt176 banned
in Austria, Germany and Luxembourg, the oilseed rape varieties MS1xRF1
banned in France and Topas 19/2 banned in France and Greece. The Regulatory
Committee, which is set up under Directive 2001/18/EC and representing the
Member States, did not reach the qualified majority necessary to support
the Commission proposal to ask the five Member States to lift their
national measures. The Commission's proposals are scientifically backed by
the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The Council can either adopt or
reject the proposals with a qualified majority. If no decision is taken
after three months, the files return to the Commission who can then adopt
them. If adopted, the Member States in question would have to repeal their
national bans at the latest 20 days after they are formally notified of the
respective decisions.
[03] Commission clears acquisition of Dusa by Sabanci
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of DuPont-Sabanci
International LLC (Dusa) of the US by Haci Ömer Sabanci Holding A.S. of
Turkey, belonging to the Turkish Sabanci group. Sabanci is a conglomerate
of companies active in many areas including chemicals and fibres, banking
and insurance, food processing, retail, textiles, energy, cement, cars,
tyres, communications and information technology, paper and packaging
materials, tourism and international trading. Dusa is a joint venture
currently controlled by DuPont and Sabanci each with 50% of the shares. It
is active in the manufacture, marketing and sale of industrial nylon
products. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review
procedure.
[04] Commission clears acquisition of Netto Supermarkt by Dansk Supermarked
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Offene Handelsgesellschaft
Netto Supermarkt GmbH & CO (NS) of Germany by Dansk Supermarked A/S (DS) of
Denmark. DS is active in the retail of daily consumer goods mainly in
Denmark. DS is jointly controlled by the A.P. Møller–Mærsk Group
(Møller, Denmark) and F. Salling A/S (Salling, Denmark). Møller's main
business is in shipping, oil drilling, shipbuilding, aviation and
retailing. Salling is primarily active in the retail sector in Denmark. NS
is active in the retailing of daily consumer goods in Germany and is
currently jointly controlled by DS and ITM Enterprises S.A. (ITME). The
operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
[05] Festival de Cannes 2005 : sélection de douze films cofinancés par
l'UE
L'ouverture du Festival de Cannes 2005 aura lieu le 11 mai. Les diverses
sélections de cette année comprennent onze 12 films bénéficiant d'une
aide au titre programme MEDIA, notamment le film d'ouverture, Lemming de
Dominik Moll, ainsi que Caché, de Michael Haneke, Manderlay de Lars von
Trier et L'Enfant de Jean-Pierre et Luc Dardenne, qui font tous partie de
la sélection officielle. En outre, la Commission européenne organise pour
la troisième fois avec les organisateurs du Festival une Journée de
l'Europe sur le thème "Les cinémas d'Europe et la société de
l'information". Viviane Reding, membre de la Commission chargée de la
société de l'information et des médias, présentera pour la deuxième
fois à Cannes le prix "Nouveaux talents" le 16 mai, la veille de la
Journée de l'Europe.
[06] The future of EU car industry : stakeholders have their say
Today, consumer organisations, car manufacturers, fuel producers, the
distribution and aftermarket sector, environmental and transport safety
interest groups, technical services, trade unions and EU institutions are
meeting in Brussels to exchange views about of the best regulatory
framework for the automotive sector in the EU. The hearing is part of the
European Commission's effort to have all views represented in this debate.
Especially those stakeholders who are represented in the High Level Group
should be heard. This is why a stakeholder consultation via the Internet
was launched in February. The hearing today is complementing that
consultation. The contributions from all stakeholders will be fed into this
process and will be taken into account as part of the Commission's
appraisal of the whole exercise.
[07] EU-Pakistan Troika : Benita Ferrero-Waldner proposes major increase in
aid to Pakistan
The EU-Pakistan Ministerial Troika will meet on 27th April 2005 in
Luxembourg. Discussions at the meeting will focus on bilateral relations
and steps that can be taken to strengthen the existing partnership,
including a Commission proposal to increase annual assistance from the EU
four times over. The agenda will also cover political developments in
Pakistan, Pakistan-India relations, Afghanistan, counter-terrorism and non-
proliferation. The EU Troika will be represented by the Commissioner for
External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-
Waldner, Luxembourg's Foreign Minister, Jean Asselborn, and the High
Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy, Javier Solana. The
Pakistani delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Khurshid M. Kasuri.
