[01] Commission secures changes to gas supply contracts between Ruhrgas and
Gazprom
In the light of improvements made to gas supply contracts between German
gas company Ruhrgas and Russian gas producer Gazprom to remove clauses that
infringed EC Treaty rules on restrictive business practices (Article 81),
the European Commission has closed its investigation. Ruhrgas will no
longer be contractually prevented from reselling outside Germany the gas it
buys from Gazprom. Gazprom will no longer be bound by a "most favoured
customer" provision with Ruhrgas.
[02] Commission clears acquisition of Glud & Marstrand by Gluma
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Glud & Marstrand Invest
A/S (Glud & Marstrand) of Denmark by Gluma Holding A/S (Gluma), also of
Denmark, belonging to the ABN AMRO group. Gluma is an acquisition vehicle
set up specially for the purpose of this transaction. ABN AMRO is a Dutch-
based group active in private equity, banking and financial services. Glud
& Marstrand is active in the manufacture and sale of metal food cans,
customised cans for tobacco and shoe polish and storage and decorative
cans. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review
procedure.
[03] Enregistrement de deux dénominations de produits agricoles
La Commission européenne a ajouté deux dénominations de produits
agricoles et alimentaires à la liste des appellations d'origine protégées
(AOP) et indications géographiques protégées (IGP). Il s'agit de "Miel
de Granada" (Espagne - AOP) et de "Olive de Nice" (France - AOP). Les deux
dénominations s'ajoutent à la liste d'environ 700 produits déjÃ
protégés en vertu de la législation sur la protection des indications
géographiques, des appellations d'origine et des spécialités

[04] First estimates for the first quarter of 2005 : EU25 current account
deficit €15.7 billion - €9.7 billion surplus on trade in services
The EU25 external current account recorded a deficit of €15.7 billion in
the first quarter of 2005, as compared with a deficit of €3.9 billion in
the first quarter of 2004 and a deficit of €2.3 billion in the fourth
quarter of 2004. In the first quarter of 2005 the EU25 external balance of
trade in services recorded a surplus of €9.7 billion as compared with a
surplus of €7.6 billion in the first quarter of 2004 and a surplus of
€9.0 billion in the fourth quarter of 2004. These provisional data,
issued by Eurostat, will be subject to revision.
[05] Un outil au service des consommateurs : Markos Kyprianou inaugure un
Centre européen des consommateurs à Chypre
Markos Kyprianou, Commissaire européen chargé de la santé et de la
protection des consommateurs, a assisté à l'inauguration du Centre
européen des consommateurs de Nicosie (Chypre) aujourd'hui. Ce centre fait
partie d'un réseau européen créé dans le but d'informer les citoyens de
leurs droits de consommateurs européens et de les aider lorsqu'ils
rencontrent des problèmes dans le cadre d'achats effectués par-delà les
frontières. L'Europe compte désormais vingt-trois centres des
consommateurs, des centres ayant également été ouverts il y a peu en
République tchèque, en Estonie, en Lituanie et en Pologne. Des centres
seront ouverts en 2006 dans les nouveaux Etats membres où il n'y en a pas
encore.
[06] Florence : three countries join the European University Institute
Ján Figel', European Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and
Multilingualism, visited the European University Institute (EUI) in
Florence on 8 and 9 June. During a meeting of the EUI High Council,
composed of delegations drawn from all governments of those EU Member
States which are also members of the EUI, a unanimous vote approved the
accession to the EUI of three new EU Member States, Cyprus, Slovenia, and
the Slovakia.
[07] More reforms and improved fiscal consolidation hold the key for growth
and jobs
(! embargo 14h30 !) European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs
Joaquin Almunia called on Member States to improve economic coordination to
achieve the dual goals of price stability and structural reforms as the
necessary conditions for more growth and better jobs in Europe. This is
also necessary to confront the problem of an ageing population. "The
disappointing performance of the European economy in recent years, the EU's
low rate of potential growth, and the strains on public finances all
underline the importance of putting in place a system of economic
governance that is efficient, well-balanced and credible", he said.
